In honor of World Poetry Day, I’m sharing one of the poems from my book. At the time I wrote it, this poem seemed so random, but it feels relevant to all that is happening now. My hope is that it resonates with you and perhaps makes you think. Thank you for taking the time to read it.

For The People

How swiftly you tear down
All that came before
This callous negligence
Leaving us confused, unsure

The chaos that you sow
Every plan you have unmade
Now the future is uncertain
And the people more afraid

No care even for the weakest
Tore their value from their hand
Sold us to the highest bidder
We can see just where you stand

Indifferent to the suffering
Left behind within your wake
Promises you once had given
Only lies you used to take

Hide behind your crooked smile
Taunting us with your deceit
Hoping we will all relent
Quietly accept defeat

But the fires you have started
Are not so easily put out
Instead they continue to spread further
Leaving anger, leaving doubt

With each order that you sign
As you strip away more joy
You only feed the flames
From each life that you destroy

Now watch it as it grows
Remember all you set ablaze
As it gets closer to your house
Start counting down the days

The choices that you make
Do not reflect all that you said
And the faith that you once held
Is burning down, is dead

One day soon the smoke will clear
And as we open up our eyes
All will finally see the truth
And together we will rise
