Spalted birch

This Sunday I’ll be teaching basic spoon carving! I’m no expert, but I’ll show you what I’ve learned thus far on my woodcarving journey. We will cover my process of breaking down logs to create spoon blanks, using a shave horse and drawknife to rough out spoon shape, detailing with sloyd knife and conclude with applying mineral oil.

These spoons were made by my senior class this year. After finding out what I do in my free time..they too wanted to try their hand at spoon making. To create their spoons they used several different power tools in the classroom. It was a great way for them to familiarize and build upon what they have learned to date in class. They are natural spoon makers.
