Starting next week, Tennessee residents will be required to obtain burn permits due to the wildfire season.

Beginning October 15th, the free permits will be required before burning leaves, natural debris or conducting prescribed burns.

The Tennessee Department of Agriculture Division of Forestry said the state averages about 1,000 wildfires each year, which burns approximately 18,000 acres.

The Department of Forestry administers the permits, which allows the agency to communicate when and where there are safe burning conditions.

The free permits can be obtained at Burn Safe Tn, with online permits issued seven days a week from 8:00 until 4:30.

Burning without a permit is a Class-C misdemeanor offense.
