In 1994 several GLAD members attended a regional prevention workshop at which they were asked to envision “a community without alcohol and other drug abuse, and to begin to develop a collaborative and comprehensive prevention strategy”. In the months that followed, they established a Youth Program Committee to pursue this vision. With involvement from several high school youth, they explored the c

oncept of alternative activities. At the time, Glastonbury had no teen center and the youth were seeking a safe supervised place where teens could gather and hang out where drug and alcohol use was clearly not allowed. The group created what has become known as The Coffee House Project. These events were initially housed at local churches, however due to the success of the program; it was relocated to Academy School. Relocation allowed expansion of the program to also include gym activities and the teen center room. Adult supervision is provided by GLAD volunteers, as well as staff from the Parks and Recreation department and Youth and Family Services.
