Hope everyone is staying cool out there! We had a fun gig in Spencer, Indiana last night. Next up on the list is Watseka, Illinois Friday night Aug. 28th and The Kentucky State Fair in Louisville with the legendary Foghat, Saturday Aug. 29th. We shared the bill with Roger Earl & the boys at the fair back in 2023, we sure had a large time!

This week on The Lowdown Hoedown, it’s part two of our Lowell George & Little Feat feature. This week we put the spotlight on ‘Feats Don’t Fail Me Now’ from 1974, ‘The Last Record Album’ from 1975, ‘Time Loves A Hero’ from 1977, ‘Waiting For Columbus’ from 1978 and ‘Down On The Farm’ from 1979.

Little Feat is an acclaimed American rock band renowned for its eclectic blend of California rock, funk, folk, jazz, country, and New Orleans swamp boogie. Formed in Los Angeles in 1969 by lead vocalist and guitarist Lowell George and keyboardist Bill Payne, the band carved out a highly distinctive, musician-friendly sound that earned immense critical acclaim despite fluctuating commercial success.

R.I.P. Frank Beard….

The guys and I first met Billy, Dusty, Frank in early 1991. Sometime in 1990, we found out through the late great James Harman, Billy was buying “Pickin’ On Nashville” albums and giving them away to friends. In return, we sent Billy some HeadHunters swag. One morning in Feb. 1991, I get a call from his secretary Denise LeMoal. She asks if I was Greg Martin, then puts Billy on the phone. I’m thinking to myself, is this for real?? Well, it sure was and that morning Billy invited the guys and me to their March 1st show at Rupp Arena in Lexington, where The Black Crowes opened. Afterward we were all invited back to the meet n’ greet, all the guys were very kind and down to earth. That started my friendship with Billy, we’ve since spent countless hours on the phone talking Blues and Guitars. He’s a class act and been a big HeadHunters supporter from day one. Oh, after he got our swag, he sent us all cool pink ZZ Top hats and a nice letter.

We’ve been around the guys several times over the years, Frank was always cordial, but the quiet one. Early on, Dusty was very talkative and jovial, but his hearing problems later in life made him more reclusive.

From the onslaught, Billy, Dusty and Frank had an indescribable sound and groove together. Those three guys were destined to play together. Such a big influence on many of us in Kentucky from the 70’s onwards. Their early shows in Bowling Green and Louisville are legendary and still talked about by folks that witnessed them. I never saw the band till 1991, but I devoured every groove on those early records.

Condolences to the Beard family, Billy, Elwood and the entire ZZ Top organization. Long live that Texas shuffle Mr. Frank Beard effortlessly laid down, it’ll always be deeply engrained in our DNA.

This week on The Lowdown Hoedown we start a two-week series on Lowell George & Little Feat. We’ll put the spotlight on the 1971 self titled release ‘Little Feat,’ “Sailin’ Shoes” from 1972 and “Dixie Chicken” from 1973. Got some Ry Cooder on tap to round things out.

Hey everyone, I’m back from Missouri, ready for another Lowdown Hoedown on D93.

Tonight on The Lowdown Hoedown, we’ll put the spotlight on Blood, Sweat & Tears, featuring both Al Kooper & David Clayton Thomas.

Blood, Sweat & Tears (also known as BS&T) is a pioneering American jazz-rock music group formed in New York City in 1967. The band is world-renowned for fusing rock, pop, blues, and R&B with a heavy brass section and complex big-band jazz arrangements.

Formed by Al Kooper, the group aimed to expand rock's horizons by adding horns and brass studio musicians. Their 1968 self-titled second album, featuring iconic Canadian lead vocalist David Clayton-Thomas, spent seven weeks at number one and won the 1970 Grammy Award for Album of the Year.

Hope everyone had a great weekend, I’m back home from the road with The Kentucky HeadHunters. We had a great time in Colorado, played two fun shows in Colorado Springs and Burlington. Hard to believe, it’s already August!

This Monday night on The Lowdown Hoedown, we’ll put the spotlight on Michael Bloomfield and The Electric Flag, plus his work with Al Kooper and Paul Butterfield.

Mike Bloomfield was a pioneering American blues-rock guitarist and composer whose explosive virtuosity made him one of the first true instrumental guitar heroes of the 1960s. Born into a wealthy family on Chicago's North Side, he abandoned the traditional path to immerse himself in the city's South Side electric blues scene, learning directly from icons like Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and B.B. King. Renowned for his fluid, hyper-fast vibrato and intense phrasing, Bloomfield rarely sang, letting his Gibson Les Paul and Fender Telecaster do the talking to fundamentally bridge urban blues with high-volume rock.

The Electric Flag was a short-lived but highly influential American blues-rock and soul supergroup formed in 1967. Spearheaded by legendary blues guitarist Mike Bloomfield after his departure from the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, the band was envisioned as an ambitious exploration of "American Music"—fusing rock, soul, blues, jazz, and psychedelia with a prominent horn section.
