Hey gang, hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend with family and friends. This is my last weekend off from the road for awhile, it’s always good being back home and recharging. And yes, it’s about time for another Lowdown Hoedown. I had a blast putting together this week’s Blues playlist. This is one of the major ways I feed my musical spirit each week.

This Monday (June 1st) night on The Lowdown Hoedown, we put the spotlight on the late great Albert King and delve into his Stax Records catalog.

Albert King, one of the single most influential bluesman in history, single-handedly ushered blues into the modern era by combining his direct, urgent Mississippi blues style with contemporary soul rhythms. He continually redefined the state of contemporary blues with his dry, husky voice and torrid Flying V guitar sound.

Also on the playlist for this week…Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble, Lonnie Mack, John Mayall’s Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton, Ten Years After, B.B. King, Freddie King, Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Crusaders with Larry Carlton, Tom Scott & The LA Express, Little Feat, Ry Cooder and more!

Please join Mr. E and me for The Lowdown Hoedown pre-show from 6:30-6:45 CST. That happens 'live' on The 'official' Lowdown Hoedown page.

‘The Lowdown Hoedown' airs from 7:00-10:00 CST on WDNS-FM and brought to you by our friends at The Mellow Mushroom, Stocktone Custom Shop, and All Things Guitar Lessons Studio. Streaming 'live' @ www.d93rocks.com, www.wdnsfm.com or download the new D93 phone app and listen from anywhere!

Hello everybody! Just getting home from Iowa and Arkansas, we had a nice two show run. It’s about time for The Lowdown Hoedown, we’re going back to the alley once again for a mess of Blues you can use!

Tonight on The Lowdown Hoedown, we put the spotlight on “The Texas Cannonball,” Freddy King. We’ll be pulling tracks from his early King Federal Records catalog.

Freddie King was born on September 3, 1934, in Gilmer, Texas, to parents Ella Mae King and J.T. King. Raised in a rural setting, he moved with his family to Chicago’s South Side in 1949, where he developed a passion for blues music, learning guitar at age six from his mother and uncle.

Known as one of the “Three Kings” of blues alongside B.B. and Albert, Freddie King became a prominent blues guitarist and singer, blending Texas and Chicago styles. He began recording in 1960 with Federal Records, producing hits like “Hide Away” ( #29 on Billboard Hot 100) and “Have You Ever Loved a Woman.” His albums Let’s Hide Away and Dance Away (1961) and Freddy King Sings (1961) established his raw, emotive style. He continued performing until his death in 1976, and his legacy endures through posthumous releases like Live at the Electric Ballroom (1996).

Also on the playlist for this week…Big Walter Horton, Johnny Shines, Willie Nix, Joe Hill Lewis, Tampa Red, Sunnyland Slim, Otis Rush, Jimmy Rogers, BB King, Albert King and more!

Hey gang, it’s just about time for another Lowdown Hoedown, and I’m raring to go!!

This Monday night on The Lowdown Hoedown, we’re going back to the alley for a mess of Lowdown Blues! This week we’ll put the spotlight on the ‘King Of The Blues’ himself, the late great B. B. King and his seminal 1965 release, ‘Live At The Regal.”

Allmusic.com writes:

B. B. King is not only a timeless singer and guitarist, he's also a natural-born entertainer, and on Live at the Regal the listener is treated to an exhibition of all three of his talents. Over percolating horn hits and rolling shuffles, King treats an enthusiastic audience (at some points, they shriek after he delivers each line) to a collection of some of his greatest hits. The backing band is razor-sharp, picking up the leader's cues with almost telepathic accuracy. King's voice is rarely in this fine of form, shifting effortlessly between his falsetto and his regular range, hitting the microphone hard for gritty emphasis and backing off in moments of almost intimate tenderness. Nowhere is this more evident than at the climax of "How Blue Can You Get," where the Chicago venue threatens to explode at King's prompting. Of course, the master's guitar is all over this record, and his playing here is among the best in his long career. Displaying a jazz sensibility, King's lines are sophisticated without losing their grit. More than anything else, Live at the Regal is a textbook example of how to set up a live performance. Talking to the crowd, setting up the tunes with a vignette, King is the consummate entertainer. Live at the Regal is an absolutely necessary acquisition for fans of B.B. King or blues music in general. A high point, perhaps even the high point, for uptown blues.

Also on the playlist for this week…Freddy King, Albert King, Otis Rush, Guitar Shorty, Howlin’ Wolf, Willie Macon, Little Walter, Buddy Guy, John Lee Ho**er and more!
