I love the way the sunlight fell across this rock and reflected off the water!
It was my most anticipated photograph from last year's waterfall trip - and it caught the light perfectly.
I was shocked when my husband's first comment on this painting was, 'It's a turtle.'
I was even more discouraged when my two-year-old grandson walked by and exclaimed 'Big turtle!'
There's no denying it - it looks like a turtle. So sad.
I almost didn't finish it, (I waited 6 months, thinking maybe it wouldn't be quite so turtle-ish). Then I decided to finish it anyhow. Because I like it. And that's what it looked like.

This is the final painting of 'By the Way'.
There are a few things about the second study I prefer to the final painting, but overall I like this one best.
What about you, which one do you prefer?

This is the second study I did for 'By the Way'
There are a few passages in this rendition that I prefer to the finished painting.
I especially like the upper right side - the trees and where they meet the water.
I also like the color of the water in the lower left side.

Extreme Waterfalling!
Probably the best part of painting waterfalls is going to see them.
It's a sport we should have taken up 30 years ago - getting to them is quite an adventure. We have a book that tells us where they are, but many of them do not have a path at all. We climbed over boulders and laurel for two wonderful days.
We were so sore we could hardly walk the next two days!

This is the first study I did for 'By the Way'.
It is the little falls on East Ganotown Road in Berkeley County.
I named it 'By the Way' because it is just a mile off of the road I drive when I go to my son's or daughter's house.
It reminds me of the song 'Over the river and through the woods to grandmother's house we go.'
