Thank you all who supported our Tiny Wildlife program! The kids had fun learning all about why bugs and other critters aren't so scary! We went over slideshows, dissected a (fake) frog, got to name the various insects in the terrarium (7 in total), were paid a visit by a tarantula, and even make their own ecosystems!

Your support has raised the next generation of nature lovers and conservationalists, and we are SUPER grateful!

The Riverside Discovery Center swung by today to show off Curly Sue the tarantula for Tiny Wildlife!! Thank you to Malachi for the presentation! Here's some fun facts we learned today!

1. Curly Sue is a curly-haired tarantula whose natural habitat is the forest. She lays down webbing and covers it with dirt so any prey wandering don't see the silky glue trap awaiting them!
2. When tarantulas (and other arthropods) molt, they also shed the lining of their organs as well. That way their innards can grow the same as the rest of the body!
3. Tarantulas can only detect light and motion with their eyes. Their feet have taste receptors that allow them to know what they're stepping onto, and for Curly Sue, know she's holding onto her caretaker!

REGISTRATION ENDS TODAY FOR TINY WILDLIFE! If you're holding onto a form, get it turned in to us before 8 PM!

Did you know? While it is very difficult to tell if a caterpillar will turn into a butterfly or a moth, the two main ways to tell are the host plant and location. Butterfly caterpillars are usually pretty picky eaters and stick to one plant species, while moth caterpillars tend to feed off most plants that they come across.

Learn more fun facts like this in our Tiny Wildlife program! From Tuesday to Friday, May 26-29 from 8:30 AM to 10:30 AM, your child will take part in indoor and outdoor fun through crafts, games, trivia, and hands-on experiences with nature's most misunderstood group of animals!

The camp is open to 3rd thru 6th graders (going into 2026-2027 school year). Make sure to fill out a registration form at our front desk OR email the Program Director @ [email protected]! The program is free, but we will happily accept donations to make this and our other programs and events bigger and better!
