I think it is a very good exercise for students to practice painting en Plein Air from time to time. We spend most of our time painting in the studio, but I like to make time for a couple of outdoor painting sessions each semester. It was windy and a little cool, so we set up in a parking garage to help with that. It turned out to be a perfect spot for painting and we had lots of interesting "vistas" to choose from. We also took time to discuss choosing a composition and point of view, and sketched a bit before jumping right in to painting. It was fun to celebrate with lunch afterwards at a Georgetown favorite .

Fun things happening in the studio lately. We've been working on learning different scraping techniques for trees. Yesterday, we painted a snowscape with Aspen trees in a monochromatic palette using a scraping technique. Working in just one color lets students focus less on color and more on the technique.

I love watching students loosen up and having fun with painting. We'll be painting outside "en plein air" next and I am really looking forward to it. We have a mixed group of students right now, some are very new to watercolor, some have taken time off and now are back, and others have been taking my class for years. There is a place for everyone and each student's journey is different. Message me if you'd like info on upcoming classes or want to save a spot for yourself in the fall! My studio is in Georgetown just off of IH35 near the SW Bypass.

I keep meaning to share more about what's going on in the studio. But we have been busy painting in 2026! An important part of my lessons is class discussion and collaboration. Sometimes we discuss as the painting process is unfolding and sometimes we discuss after the painting is complete. Each student's perspective is important.

Only 12 lesson commitment….YOU CAN DO THIS, soooo fun!!! Don’t be scared of Watercolor. It’s a “learned” skill.

Well, we've reached the end of the year for my Tuesday Topics class. Last week was our last class of 2025. We met at and painted outside again. It was a bit more chilly than the week before and I don't have as many pictures but the class agreed it was beneficial to paint in the same area two weeks in a row.

Each of these students started out by taking BOTH my Newbies Watercolor class (registration is open now!) AND my Beginning Drawing class. Some students had never taken art before. Some students are pretty new to the class and others have been taking from me for years. We have covered many topics this year and had so much fun along the way. I can't wait to get back to it in January!

If you are interested in learning watercolor painting, I have my Newbies class starting January 5. It's only 6 weeks long and meets twice a week. See my website for more information at www.KimHoerster.com/lessons.

I think it's very beneficial to have my students paint outside at least once or twice a semester. Plus it's just fun! People walking by love to stop and ask what we're all doing out here. This is my Tuesday Topics class taking advantage of the beautiful weather the last couple of weeks. Two weeks ago, we met near to paint and students each chose what and where they wanted to paint.

It's been fun trying new things in my Tuesday Topics class. We painted our prepared wooden panels, in both landscape and portrait direction. We learned about preserving our paintings with spray varnish or cold wax, and also adding a wire to the back for hanging. I love how we dive into different things in this class.

Today was the last lesson in my Beginning Drawing class. It has really flown by. Students have learned so much in just 8 lessons and spent time drawing their own objects today. Many of these students have already taken my Newbies Watercolor class and will move into my Tuesday Topics class soon. Other students who have not yet taken Newbies have signed up to take in January. Each of these courses is taught only once per year. If you have ever wanted to learn about watercolor, I would love to have you join us too. Registration is open now and the first day of class will be Jan 5, 2026. https://www.kimhoerster.com/lessons

My Tuesday Topics watercolor class started back last week. We jumped right in with a new project and it's been fun for everyone to learn something new. We affixed our watercolor paper to wooden panels and will be painting them next week. Every student is choosing their own subject to paint--it will be interesting to see what each person has been inspired by.
