Mark your calendars for the first exhibition of the 2022 season at the CAM Green! “In Her Mind’s Eye: Doris Elizabeth Prouty,” an exhibition of quilts designed and sewn by Doris Elizabeth Prouty (1947-2020), will be on view from June 11–July 31 at the Janet & William Ellery James Center at 13 Poplar Street, Gloucester, MA.
🧵🪡
Prouty was a resident of Gloucester for over 40 years and a self-taught African American quilter. Working in vibrant colors and incorporating an abundance of shapes and patterns, Prouty’s quilts are founded in the traditions of African quilt makers and vividly capture the stories of her life and her community here on Cape Ann.
Beginning in the 1980s with traditional block patterns, Prouty quickly moved on to applique quilts that are at once functional and beautiful. With this transition, her work became increasingly complex as narratives related to social and climate justice, feminism, family, and black history emerged in her quilts.
One of the strengths of Cape Ann’s art community is the diversity of the work being created here, and happily, textiles and artists like Doris Elizabeth Prouty who work with them are finding their place in the mainstream and gaining the recognition they deserve. The Cape Ann Museum is pleased and honored to be able to share Prouty’s work.
The exhibition will open on Saturday, June 11 with a day-long opening celebration from 10 am–5 pm at the James Center. On Sunday, June 19, the Cape Ann Museum is partnering with the North Shore Juneteenth Association and Community Engagement Member Toni Armstrong to present the Gloucester Juneteenth Festival, which will highlight Doris Prouty’s work.
