This is a 5.5" x 14" Ambrosia Maple snare with our custom wood hoops. They are leveled on the inside to create a precision surface that applies even pressure on the collar of the drum head. Level bearing edges and hoop surfaces makes the drums easy to tune and very stable. The hoops are rounded at the top and the height is designed to be the same as a standard triple flanged hoop, so there is no difference in stick technique to produce rim shots.

The real magic is the tone. Think of metal hoops as orchestral triangles. Metal hoops add high frequency overtones that are not really natural to the drum. Wood hoops produce a much warmer, more natural sound.

Because of the thin shape, the hoops require mini-claws which will require shorter tension rods on most drums. They are drop-in replacements for triple flanged or die cast cast hoops with a snug, slip on fit to the aluminum collar of the hoop, which eliminates centering and tension issues.

" I just met Steve Meyer drum builder at Head Drums at Lanier Music in Mandeville LA. Really great guy . This guy is a scientist of drums. I played a Zebrawood snaredrum that blew my mind. I've been playing drums my entire life and I have never I mean NEVER heard a snaredrum sound as amazing as this drum. Do yourself a favor check out these drums. I'm saying these drums will change the way you ever thought drums could sound."

What's different about Head Drums Stave Drums? It could be that we hand pick each piece of wood for aesthetics and tone-before we shape the shell. It could be that we carefully craft each shell by hand from board to beauty so our drum owners can have an exceptional drum that they'll enjoy for a lifetime. It could be that we're one of only a handful of stave builders and possibly the only builder to produce a shell 1/4 inch in thickness, leaving the wood free to really resonate. Drummers that play Head Drums already know- why play a drum that thuds when you can play one that sings, shouts, whispers, booms and cracks. Head Drums. 15 years of exceptional sound-wrapped by God.

This pretty little 5.5x14 snare is built from Cocobolo, a rosewood which comes from South America. It's super hard, oily and dense like Ebony. Drums built from Cocobolo play and produce a much bigger sound than it would appear from the size of the shell..

8 X 14 Macassar Ebony Snare. Built and shipped. Spectacular to look at and there's something incredible about a drum made from this dense wood. An ebony shell is like a metal shell, it reflects every nuance and returns all the energy of the stick; but because it's organic it's way more complex. According to our ebony snare owners, their Head Drums ebony drums hands-down outperform their drums built on a metal shell.
