An amazing moment to share our story with POLISH with Marie-Adélina

Every June, Pride floods the feed: confetti cannons, corporate floats, headline performers. But there's another kind of Pride happening in the places the cameras don't follow.

In Geneva, New York, a small city in the Finger Lakes, q***r and trans people have been showing up for one another for over a decade. This year, for the first time, they're doing it entirely on their own terms.

I sat down with FLX Pride Festival founder Amy Hickey-Smith and committee co-convenor Columba Salamony to talk about what it means to build something, let it go, and keep showing up: in a small town, in a bad political moment, under a banner that reads Community in Color.

The full interview is on POLISH with Marie-Adélina now. Link in bio

2026 has been an amazing year with support from Geneva Women’s Assembly, Family Counseling Service of the Finger Lakes and our “Community in Color!” We have made a successful transition from organization lead to community lead leadership for the FLX Pride Festival.

Why Pride in the Finger Lakes? Maybe you’ve heard about national LGBT+ heroes, but have you heard about Frances Potter & Mary Peck, who were part of the National Women's Suffrage Association in the 1910s, or Charles Griffes, who was a crucial part of performing and music connecting with BIPOC artists and performers throughout New York State? LGBTQIA+ history happens everywhere, even in the smallest and most rural towns. Celebrating FLX Pride allows us to highlight our community members who make such a difference to our local community every day. 💛
