We Are Friends! (for real)

Friends Eepi Chaad and Claire Drennan are the creators of We Are Friends, now up at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts.

We met in Houston, where we created the friends and the We Are Friends series. When Claire moved to Spruce Pine, NC in 2021, some of the friends went with her and some stayed.

This past weekend, we had so much fun installing this show. It was a reunion of friends, both plush and human.

We spent several days at Arrowmont's Wolpert Gallery installing the show with new friend Heather Wetzel and making some custom cushion friends for comfy viewing.

Happily, our weekend at Arrowmont coincided with the school’s “Legacy Weekend,” when arts educators and administrators visit the campus for a weekend of craft workshops.

Both Eepi and Claire wear arts administrator hats, so we felt right at home checking out everyone’s impressive work and sitting down for meals in the dining hall with friends new and old.

Eepi Chaad friend and Claire Drennan friend had a blast bringing the friends to such a special place of maker friends.

WE ARE FRIENDS

Originally conceived as a physical installation of huggable sculptures, the We Are Friends video series became a response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Featuring soft sculptures crafted from recycled materials, this “virtual offering of togetherness” gave friends Eepi Chaad and Claire Drennan a much-needed framework in which to collaborate and connect, releasing weekly videos during the summer of 2020.

We Are Friends has continued to bind Claire and Eepi across time and distance, and the friends are excited to be reunited at Arrowmont, having traveled from Houston, TX and Spruce Pine, NC for the occasion.
