The Headless Horseman of South Carolina

Camden, South Carolina, is the oldest inland city in the state, with two Revolutionary War Battles occurring here. Some also believe that Camden was built upon the site of the chiefdom of Cofitachequi, which was founded in AD 1300 and encountered by the Hernando de Soto expedition in April 1540.

The area is home to another legend dating to the Second Battle of Camden on Hobkirk's Hill on April 25, 1781 (I believe this is a story from Tally Johnson's Ghosts of the P*e Dee book). A cannon decapitated a soldier while on horseback during battle, with his horse running into the Black River Swamp.

No one knows his identity, but his ghost is said to haunt the battlefield. The headless horseman is often seen during a full moon, emerging from the swamp and riding across the battlefield.

The Ghostly Legend of the Land’s End Light

The Land’s End Light is a famous ghostly legend from St. Helena Island in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. The yellowish orb appears on a 3-mile stretch of Land’s End Road, just a few miles past the Chapel of Ease. Some also refer to this road as one of the most haunted in the state, and it’s also been called South Carolina’s Sleepy Hollow. There are a few deviations to this tale, but the orb usually appears from 10 to 12 feet above the roadway before zooming up to curious onlookers and then abruptly disappears into the night. It’s also been reported that the mysterious light hovers next to vehicles and chases them as they pass through the area.

One legend dates back to the Civil War, when Confederate soldiers were stationed there. Reportedly, around 1861, the soldiers got into a physical altercation with some residents, when one of the soldiers was decapitated. The soldier is now said to wander Land’s End Road with his old lantern, looking for his missing head.

Again, this South Carolina ghost story has three different legends attached to it.
