Town of Garner Social Media Comments Policy

The Town of Garner uses social media to interact with residents, businesses and visitors about public issues related to our jurisdiction. Please note that our social media properties are moderated online discussion sites and are subject to North Carolina public records laws, as well as e-discovery laws and policies. All comments and content shared on ou

r government-sponsored social media must pertain to items within the jurisdictional control or authority of our governmental unit. The following are examples of unacceptable social networking content and comments. Please note this list is not intended to be all inclusive:

1) Any content or comments that do not relate to the jurisdiction or authority of the jurisdiction itself.
2) Profane or obscene language or content as determined by the profanity filters offered through each social media platform (such posts result in the comment/content being blocked through the social media’s profanity filter).
3) Content that promotes, fosters or perpetrates discrimination on the basis of race, natural hair or hairstyles, ethnicity, creed, color, sex, pregnancy, marital or familial status, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, national origin or ancestry, National Guard or veteran status, religious belief or non-belief, age or disability.
4) Duplicate posts by the same author (the original post will be left intact assuming it follows the guidelines of acceptable comments or content).
5) Solicitations of commerce, including content that contains gratuitous links (links or references to other relevant governmental webpages or official government sites are acceptable).
6) Promotions or content related to political organizations of any type.
7) Advocation of illegal activity; or those that compromise safety or security of the public.
8) Infringement on copyrights or trademarks.
9) Confidential or non-public information, including but not limited to any personally identifiable medical information and any content that violates the legal rights of the owner of said content. Please note that the opinions expressed in the comments section of our social media properties do not reflect the opinions and positions of the Town of Garner government, its elected officials or employees. Due to subfreezing temperatures and the potential for black ice, Town offices will open at 10 a.m. and close at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27. Tuesday evening recreational activities at Town facilities are canceled. Parks will reopen once Public Works has assessed conditions.

Additional updates:

• The Town Council work session scheduled for January 27 is canceled. Agenda items will be moved to the February 3 regular meeting. The special Town Council meeting scheduled for 4 p.m. on January 27 will be rescheduled for 4 p.m. on February 3.

• Solid-waste collection is expected to resume tomorrow, starting with Monday routes, with additional routes serviced as crews work to catch up.

• The county’s emergency shelters at Southeast Raleigh and Heritage High Schools are closing today.

Town Offices, Facilities and Parks Closed Tomorrow; No Solid-Waste Service

Town offices, facilities and parks will be closed on Monday. Meals on Wheels service is canceled for Monday as well.

There will be no solid-waste collection on Monday. Garner residents on Monday routes should place their carts at the curb by 7 a.m. on Tuesday for pickup. Residents on other routes should follow their regular weekly pickup schedule.

Wake County has opened emergency shelters at the following locations:

* Southeast Raleigh High School, 2600 Rock Quarry Road, Raleigh
* Heritage High School, 1150 Forestville Road, Wake Forest

Road conditions remain extremely dangerous. Please continue to stay off the roads if at all possible (even during lulls in precipitation) and stay indoors to avoid the risk of serious injury. If you must go outdoors, please try to remain on grassy areas instead of hard surfaces.

Due to the expected dangerous inclement weather, Town parks and facilities will be closed Saturday and Sunday and will remain closed until further notice. All classes and league activities on Saturday are canceled.

The Garner Performing Arts Center has postponed Barter Theatre’s "Alice in Wonderland" until March 22, 2026. Original tickets will be honored for the new date. If you are unable to attend the rescheduled date, please email [email protected]. Phone calls are difficult to track as we do not have full-time box-office staff; email is the best way to ensure your refund is processed. Refunds to your original purchase method typically take five business days to appear. If you purchased your tickets with cash, the Town will issue a refund check via postal mail.

Want to play basketball, watch movies, play board games, or just hang out?

The Avery Street Teen Zone has something for everyone. Starting March 4, Avery Street Recreation Center will be open to teens ages 12-17 years on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00PM - 5:00PM for free play in the gym and front room. Registration is highly encouraged.

🌳 Parks will remain closed tomorrow. Public Works crews will assess conditions and make a determination about when parks are safe to reopen.
