This Labor Day, we honor the hands — and the hearts — that built our Basque community here in the Carson Valley.
We remember the herders who spent long, solitary seasons in the mountains, tending sheep across the American West. But we also remember the women of the Basque boarding houses who ran the households, cooked, cleaned, and kept the community together while the men were away. Their work was every bit as essential: they were the anchor that made it possible for Basque families to survive and thrive in a new country.
Today, we honor them all and to everyone who carries that legacy forward.
