Garden City Arts

Garden City Arts GCA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit arts organization with a gallery located in Downtown Garden City. We offer art exhibitions, art classes and cultural events.

Garden City Arts was founded in 1989 under the name of Southwest Arts & Humanities Council with the intent to bring more arts and humanities events to Southwest Kansas. The organization was housed in borrowed spaces for many years until moving to our current downtown location in 2001. During our history Garden City Arts has provided the community with numerous musical & theatrical performances, children's art activities and several public works of art throughout Garden City. Currently we host 10 to 12 art exhibits every year and showcase the talents of local artists in our gift section. We also provide public works of art, cultural programs and art classes for both children and adults for residents of Southwest Kansas. Garden City Arts operates under the guidance of a 12 member board of directors and Executive Director Katy Guthrie.

Friday night, we celebrated all 38 artists who participated in this year’s SWKS Squared Art Competition and recognized seven award winners:

October is here, and there are plenty of ways to make it a little more creative at Garden City Arts.

One of the biggest events this month is the opening reception for SWKS Squared, our annual 12x12 art competition featuring artists from across the region. Join us Friday, October 2 from 6–8 PM to see the exhibition, meet artists, and help us celebrate this year’s show.

We also have good news for anyone who missed out on our Fall Postcards class. The first session filled up so quickly that we opened a second session!

Several other October classes and programs are also getting close to capacity, so if something catches your eye, don’t wait too long to register.

LAST CALL for SWKS Squared!

Entries are due SATURDAY, September 26, by 5 PM at Garden City Arts.

Before you bring your work in, double-check that your artwork measures exactly 12 x 12 inches, including the frame, is ready to hang, and has the corresponding entry tag securely attached to the back.

Artists may submit up to three works for a $25 entry fee.

Then bring everything to:

Our afterschool programs are about more than making art. They’re a chance for kids to experiment, work together, build confidence, and discover what they can accomplish, even when things don’t go as planned!

Take a look at some of the creativity and fun happening in our classroom.

Our next round of afterschool programs begins in October, and spots are filling quickly!

Our older age group is already FULL, but we still have a few spots available for ages 6–7. If your young artist wants to join us, now is the time to register!

We're excited to partner with the Finney County Historical Society for the FOURTH time to showcase artwork created by young artists in our community!

This summer, children in two of our art camps created artwork celebrating America's 250th birthday. Their creations are now on display at the Historical Society as part of a special community exhibition.

We're proud of these young artists and grateful to the Historical Society for helping us share their creativity with the community.

The exhibition is open now through mid-November. Stop by and check out their work!

Saturday is a BIG day for Downtown Garden City! Fall Fest is back, and Garden City Arts has several ways for you and your family to get creative while exploring downtown.

Stop by and see what we have planned:

*Shop local art: Visit our Gift Gallery to explore artwork from regional artists and take advantage of special discounts. Check out the graphic for details!

*Make some art: Find our booth on Main Street for FREE, hands-on art projects.

*Explore downtown: Pick up our FREE Art Scavenger Hunt at our booth and discover art throughout downtown Garden City.

Complete the scavenger hunt and return it to the gallery to be entered into a drawing for one of FOUR original artworks created by Ariana Wheet and a FREE art class at Garden City Arts!

Bring the family, enjoy Fall Fest, and spend some time between 9AM - 4PM supporting the artists and businesses that make downtown Garden City special.

There’s still time to make your square!

The deadline for SWKS Squared is coming up September 26, which means now is the time to finish that piece you’ve been working on, or start something new.

Remember, your artwork can be created in any medium, but it MUST measure exactly 12 x 12 inches, including the frame, and it must arrive ready to hang.

Artists may submit up to three works for one $25 entry fee, and seven cash prizes will be awarded, including $500 for First Place.

You don’t need an enormous canvas to make an impact. Show us what you can do with 12 x 12.

Entries are due by 5 PM on September 26.
