Is there a better way to celebrate World Rainforest Day than with a new resident?!

Everyone welcome Diah, our new 9-year-old Komodo Dragon to, to the Rainforest Pyramid! 🦎✨

Hatched at Fort Worth Zoo in 2017 as part of the Species Survival Plan (SSP), she’s here to shine—literally! Her name, Diah, means ‘brightness, light, or beauty.’

We’re helping her settle into her new home, so keep an eye out for glimpses of her in the coming days. We’re monitoring her closely (get it… monitor haha) to ensure she’s adjusting comfortably—giving her the choice to be in or out of public view. Welcome, Diah!

World Rainforest Day is a global celebration dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of rainforests and inspiring action to protect them. Covering just 6% of Earth’s surface, rainforests are home to over half of the world’s plant and animal species, regulate our climate, and produce 20% of the planet’s oxygen. Yet they face critical threats like deforestation, habitat loss, and climate change.

At Moody Gardens, rainforest conservation is part of our mission every day. As an AZA-accredited institution, we are committed to advancing conservation, education, and scientific understanding of these vital ecosystems. Through partnerships with organizations like Rainforest Trust and American Forests, we support initiatives that protect rainforest species and habitats in the Americas and beyond.

Our team also engages in habitat restoration projects and collaborates with researchers to study and preserve rainforest biodiversity. By working alongside conservation partners, we help advance knowledge that supports the long-term health of these irreplaceable ecosystems.

Education is just as important. Every year, Moody Gardens connects hundreds of thousands of guests, students, and educators with the wonders of rainforests through immersive exhibits, educational programs, camps, and hands-on learning experiences. By fostering a deeper understanding of rainforest ecosystems, we hope to inspire future scientists, conservationists, and advocates for these critical environments.

On this World Rainforest Day, we celebrate the beauty, importance, and resilience of rainforests and reaffirm our commitment to protecting them for generations to come.
