Have You Ever Seen a Coffin Floating on a Galveston Beach?

It sounds like something out of a horror movie… but after the 1900 Galveston Hurricane, scenes like this were a reality in Galveston.

In the days following the storm, victims were taken offshore and buried at sea. But the Gulf currents carried many of them back to shore. Coffins were also torn from cemeteries by the surge and swept into the water.

The sea didn’t keep what it was given.

They're finally doing it! They've begun excavating the site of Jean Lafitte's Maison Rouge!

Tomorrow, Jan 10th from 10am to 2pm, researchers and TAMUG students will be holding an "open house" at 1417 Harbourside, the site of Lafitte's Maison Rouge. Come and tour the site, ask questions, and immerse yourself in the truth (and a little lore) about Galveston's most notorious pirate - Jean Lafitte.
