Celebrate Freedom in the Birthplace of Juneteenth today with The Grand.

General Gordon Granger landed on Galveston Island on June 19, 1865. It was on this day he issued the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing hundreds of enslaved people of African descent—two full years after the proclamation was originally issued. Galveston has been designated as the Capital of Juneteenth by the Texas Legislature for this historical event since May 24, 2025.

Today, Galveston visitors can stand where this defining moment in U.S. history began and experience the region's Juneteenth legacy through historic sites, landmarks, cultural attractions, public art and annual celebrations.

Juneteenth celebrations are starting as early as tomorrow here in Galveston. Click here for a full list of upcoming events, including Nia Cultural Center, Inc's 5th Annual Emancipation Gospel Celebration Concert featuring Four-time GRAMMY® Award-winner and multiple Stellar and GMA Dove Award winner Karen Clark Sheard at The Grand.

Galveston will celebrate the 161st Juneteenth Anniversary this summer with events recognizing Black culture's heritage and impact in America.
Karen Clark Sheard, award-winning gospel singer and member of the legendary Clark Sisters will headline the 5th Annual event. Known for her unique multi-octave vocal range, she has inspired artists across genres, including Beyoncé. Also performing will be Award-winning artist Byron Cage, known as the “Prince of Praise,” who made his mark on gospel music as a respected minister of music and through a series of chart-topping live albums and radio singles. His now-classic recording of “The Presence of the Lord Is Here,” introduced the world to the contemporary worship song.
