People all over the country will be celebrating America's 250th birthday throughout 2026 and The Ohio Valley Symphony has commissioned Tim Berens to write a special selection celebrating the life of Harriet Tubman for a performance on April 25 at the historic Ariel Opera House in downtown Gallipolis, Ohio. The 7:30 pm concert is being recorded live for later release nationwide
A Call to Freedom is a grand celebration of America’s history in music covering such soul stirring songs as America the Beautiful, Battle Hymn of the Republic, When Johnny Comes Marching Home to the more introspective Simple Gifts, Wayfaring Stranger and Kumbaya.
Tim Berens is no stranger to the Ariel stage having appeared as a guitar soloist with The Ohio Valley Symphony several times as well as having arranged numerous pieces including The O. O. McIntyre Suite which was composed by Meredith Willson and premiered by the Paul Whiteman Band in 1936. He conducted the OVS in 2018 for “Songs of Rural America” with guest soloist and folk singer Michel Johnathon and in 2019 with Broadway star Mike Eldred. In 2023 Tim arranged an entire concert of Roarin’ 20’s music for the OVS and the concert is still airing on American Public Television nationwide.
Tim’s poignant arrangement of Amazing Grace that was recently featured at the grand re-opening of the Notre Dame Cathedral will be sung on the Ariel stage by vocalist Mandy Gaines along with other selections as part of the evening’s festivities. Mandy has carried American music around the world performing in Belgium, France, Germany, Switzerland, Russia and in numerous Asian countries. Tim likes to say Mandy is the only person that he can say he met in Singapore! She has performed with such jazz greats as Wynton Marsalis, Randy Brecker and Herbie Hancock. Mandy will be singing the role of Harriet Tubman in the world premiere of Harriet written by Tim Berens for The Ohio Valley Symphony.
