Bobbie Wilbur, stop No 10 at this year’s , respects preservation, restoration, salvaging and re-use, and she’s a fan of whimsy. She first learned her craft as a teenager, working as a ranch hand with her dad, and later restoring historic homes alongside talented tradespeople. She was privileged to train with a master furniture restorer, specializing in Arts and Crafts (or Mission) style antiques.

Bobbie does her “picking” everywhere. Her eyes are always open for the unusual, reclaimable, purposeful, and just plain fun. She has made dining tables from the floorboards of a historic Galisteo house, and she’s particularly fond of the rust and patina of screed retired from rock quarries.

Bobbie’s inspirations are equally eclectic: from nature, to industry, to historic homes. Her studio is a woodworking and metalworking workshop, and the yard is strewn with reclaimed materials, aging naturally in the sun and rain, and waiting to find their way into yet-to-be-imagined work. Galisteo is her refuge: the sights and sounds of the village and the vastness of the Basin. Here, Bobbie ponders large and small creations, functional or fun, from reclaimed and reused materials.

An untraditional silversmith, working with fine silver and bronze, Nora Gonzalez Buckley, stop No 10 in this year’s , takes a special joy in designing with fine silver clay. Years of playing, practicing and working with a collaborator in Massachusetts built her skill and confidence in this unconventional creative medium. Inspired by other metal clay artists, Nora is forever extending her range to include new techniques: like adding glass, cubic zirconia or setting a bezel in clay before it enters the kiln. Forming the clay, sintering in the kiln, polishing the fired work, and the addition of beads, stones or found jewelry pieces complete a pair of earrings, a pendant or a bolo tie.

In the light and airiness of her Galisteo studio, which she shares with other creative women, Nora can be seen painting silver paste onto a leaf or a twig or – her favorite – a Cholla Cactus skeleton. Despite her formal training, she considers herself a self-guided student of an untraditional silversmithing art.

Artist Catherine Ferguson is stop No5 in this year’s .

She paints retablos and images of saints on wood, and sometimes even car metal. Working in watercolor and oil, her subjects range from still-lives to landscapes, and from animals to birds to friends. Having painted the sunset in watercolor several nights a week for many years, she has compiled full books of sunset paintings.

Catherine has written numerous poetry chapbooks and won two New Mexico Book Awards; one for poetry as co-author of The Sound the Raven Makes, and another for her retablo illustrations in You Who Make the Sky Bend by Lisa Sandlin. In 2017, Sunstone Press in Santa Fe published her book of poems I Thought You Would be Shelter.

While her primary inspiration is nature, Catherine’s mother, artist Susan Ferguson, was a major influence, and, in 2014 and 2016, their work was featured together at El Museo Cultural.

A member of the Galisteo Studio Tour from its conception, and for over twenty-six years, following a period without showing, Catherine Ferguson has now happily returned.

Lorraine Weiss (stop No 4 in the ) is a designer and jewelry maker, whose works are shown in boutiques and galleries across the US and Europe, including Victory Contemporary. She works principally with vintage beads, gathered from over forty years of traveling in China, Afghanistan, India, and Mexico, and from gem shows and auctions across the U.S. and Europe. She chooses stones for their symbolic and evocative qualities, seeking out elements, colors and textures with healing and calming properties.

Jewelry-making is a meditation for Lorraine. The designs are one-of-a-kind, woven and hand-tied with prayers and well wishes for the wearer. These are wearable touchstones: outward reminders of inner beauty, radiance and grace.

Artist Peter Stocker, his first year in the Galisteo Studio tour, found inspiration for his work in Galisteo’s rock formations, and the stories embedded within them. Peter is experimenting with substrates and surfaces: everything from masonite to skateboard decks.

Self taught, if you ask him why he took up painting in his twenties, it was to put something on his naked walls. For much of his life, family and a career in brand design took him away from the canvas, but when The Drolls asked him to design a record cover, his knowledge of graphic design furthered his work as an artist. Recently, a long, slow recovery from a devastating mountain bike accident became a dedicated and prolific return to painting. Unable to ride, he would hike and photograph the Galisteo rocks; then at home he would sit at his father’s drafting table and translate the rocks into paintings.

Peter’s studio is stop No16 in this year’s tour. October 11-12, studios are open 10am - 5pm both days. Plan your visit at galisteostudiotour.org
