Happy Pink Flamingo Day!
The pink flamingos we know and love, illustrated in this 1951 painting, were a staple of Florida at the time and could be found in most regalia from Caribbean destinations. They were associated with travel and exotic tourism.
Prior to the mass production of plastic pink flamingos in 1957, Stevan Dohanos’s "Trailer Park Garden" offers a humorous peek into the lives of residents of a trailer park in Bradenton, Florida. The scene features a gleaming Airstream trailer and several middle-aged snowbirds enjoying their sunny slice of heaven, complete with fishing pole and tackle, tiny shell-bordered garden and kitschy pink flamingo ornament. Dohano's "Trailer Park Garden" is currently on view in the "Florida in the Frame" exhibition.
