Did you know that the University of Florida is a member of the Alliance for the Arts in Research Universities (a2ru)? This network of colleges and universities focuses on advancing the role of the arts, design, and arts-integrative research in higher education.

As active participants in a2ru, CAME is proud to share that our director, Osubi Craig, has been reappointed to serve on the Executive Committee through 2028.

Drawing on more than 20 years of experience as an arts administrator, educator, and community builder, Osubi helps guide conversations and collaborations across institutions nationwide. With the Executive Committee, he advises a2ru's leadership on advancing its mission, fostering cross-sector partnerships, and shaping the future of arts-integrative research and practice.

The impact of that work doesn't stay at the national level. Ideas, partnerships, and perspectives shared at a2ru directly inform our campus and community programming, including our Atunda project, CAME Ideas Lab, Students Thinking BIG and more.

As we continue building bridges between arts, research, entrepreneurship, and community engagement, we're excited to see how these national conversations help create meaningful local change.

📅 Registration is now open for the 2026 a2ru Conference, How We Thrive: Arts, Health and Human Flourishing. Learn more at a2ru.org.

At the end of the spring semester, CAME welcomed a cohort of affiliate faculty to our first-ever Writing, Making, & Collaboration Retreat! Part of our Ideas Lab initiative, we created this opportunity to support our affiliates and partners with incubating and securing resources for interdisciplinary research related to CAME's focus areas.

Over three days, faculty participants stepped away from their daily routines to focus on projects such as funding proposals, book prospectuses, and new research collaborations.

Along with dedicated space for independent work, the retreat offered opportunities for participants to reflect, exchange feedback, and generate new ideas. Guest facilitators led sessions about resources and mentorship support for project development, fundraising strategies, and grant proposals.

CAME thanks the UF College of the Arts research staff for supporting this program. We’re excited to follow the projects and partnerships that emerged from these three inspiring days and look forward to sharing updates along the way!

We are excited to share that CAME has received seed funding for a collaboration with the UF/IFAS and the Lastinger Center for Learning’s New Worlds Reading initiative on the Books & Cooks family literacy and nutrition program. The project is one of only six proposals to receive a PLANTMED (Projects Linking Agriculture, Nutrition, and Therapeutic Medicine for Every Diet) award as part of the university-wide Food is Medicine initiative. This effort supports interdisciplinary education and research approaches using nutrition for diet-related chronic disease prevention and management. Co-funded with the UF Diabetes Institute, the program will integrate arts-based engagement along with enhanced diabetes prevention education.

This spring, we convened a community advisory board comprised of interdisciplinary faculty, program alumni, artists, healthcare providers, and other stakeholders. This group will offer feedback to ensure that the program materials and activities effectively engage families on the importance of food culture, nutrition and literacy. We can't wait to kick off the new program in the fall!

As part of the Stories for Sustainability series, the Soundscapes as Oral History Workshop will focus on learning how to relay a personal story through a soundscape. Workshop participants will reflect on their personal relationships between sound and memory in order to create a brief “narrative” in the form of an audio soundscape, while also gaining familiarity with Audacity—a creative audio tool that can facilitate soundscape creation. The workshop will be led by Dr. Jillian Rogers (UF School of Music).

Free and open to the public.
Advance registration is requested, use the link in our bio, as space at the workshop venue will be limited.

On Thursday, April 30, CAME was honored to participate in the Creating Healthy Communities: A Florida Arts in Health Forum. We were inspired by the incredible gathering of Florida artists, arts in health professionals, and healthcare workers. Along with creative moments that sparked meaningful connections, we learned about the current developments in arts and public health from special guests including Dr. Jill Sonke.

Our director, Osubi Craig, spoke on a panel with national and state arts leaders on Recognizing Art is Care, and our SPARC 352 Project Manager, Carla Lewis, participated in a panel discussion highlighting local arts and health initiatives in the Gainesville community.
