The Mainewoods Dance Camp community is deeply saddened by the loss of Yves Moreau. We will miss him greatly. Our hearts go out to his wife France Bourque-Moreau, their children, and the rest of his family.
Yves Moreau was a teacher of the highest caliber. How to enumerate his gifts? Extensive knowledge of dances of Bulgaria and adjoining countries, the ability to break down even the most complicated dance into teachable elements, clear but never showy footwork and styling, unflappable patience, a sense of humor, a deep appreciation for various cultures around the world. But these many gifts still fall short of capturing his spirit. He was a kind and generous person, easy to work with, warm and accessible to all.
Mainewoods Dance Camp opened its doors in 1995, succeeding Maine Folk Dance Camp where Yves had previously taught. In 1997 he and France joined us as Featured Guests at Mainewoods for the first time. They joined us seven more times after that. At our virtual camp in 2020, we celebrated 25 Years of International Understanding Through Dance with an evening dance party of 25 favorite dances honoring 25 favorite teachers. Yves and France spoke that evening, after which we honored them by dancing the beloved Săbrali Sa Se Săbrali and High Green Mountain.
May we honor Yves by carrying forth his spirit in our own lives.
