If you haven't contributed to the community eelgrass mural yet, come by the Art Barn this weekend and make a tile (or if you have already, make another one)! An Alchemy staff member will be there Saturdays and Sundays from 12-3 to help guide the activity. It's a fun, free weekend art-making opportunity, and while lots of people have contributed there's still plenty of mural to fill!

There's another Landscape in Motion ferry-based painting class coming up Sunday 10/25!

Take your art practice out on the water! Join artist Glenn Hendrick aboard the interisland ferry for a unique painting experience, with a watercolor and gouache demonstration and time to capture the ever-changing island landscape. Supplies provided!

This class is held on the interisland ferry and is a great option for folks from other islands to join in!

Sunday, October 25, 11:30 AM-2:30 PM

We will meet onboard the interisland ferry that leaves Friday Harbor at 11:30am, Orcas at 12:50pm, Shaw at 1:05pm and Lopez at 1:25pm. We'll arrive back at Friday Harbor at 2:15pm. Check the ferry schedule for more info/return times for the other islands.

We were so fortunate to host this lovely group from the Center for Indigenous Midwifery for a private natural dye class a couple of weeks ago! At 38 students this may have been our largest class ever, and it was amazing having so much creative energy in the studio at once. New open studio opportunity at Alchemy's Photography Darkroom!

Introducing Film Photography Club, a weekly gathering for film photographers to develop film, make prints, explore vintage cameras, and share knowledge and techniques. Hang out with other film photographers and get familiar with Alchemy's darkroom studio!

Monday evenings, 7-9 PM

Open to beginners and experienced photographers alike. A $10 drop-in fee includes darkroom materials and can be applied toward a monthly darkroom membership if you decide to join. The darkroom is located in the ceramics studio building at Alchemy's Forest Campus (1255 Wold Rd)

Digging into Bones Class
Built for Sea & Sky: Drawing the Hidden Architecture of Salish Sea Birds
Saturday, October 24, 4:00-6:00 PM

Join naturalist and educator Quinn Fitzpatrick for a two-hour nature journaling class, exploring the remarkable structure of Salish Sea birds. Participants will get an up-close look at real avian skulls, wings, feet, and skeletal specimens generously on loan from Salish Wildlife Rescue, using drawing as a way to investigate the relationship between form, function, and the lives of birds.

Stitch and Bitch at Sea! This Sunday 10/11, 11:30am-2:30pm

Walk on the inter-island ferry with a sewing or fiber project, ride a loop around the islands and join our ferry fiber arts circle! Katey Rissi will facilitate and will share a new skill from her own practice, so if you don't have a current work in progress you are welcome to come just to learn something new. It's also a great option for folks from other islands to join in!

We will be on the ferry that leaves Friday Harbor at 11:30am, Orcas at 12:50pm, Shaw at 1:05pm and Lopez at 1:25pm. We'll arrive back at Friday Harbor at 2:15pm. Check the ferry schedule for more info/return times for the other islands.

Open Call! Our 2027 artist residency application is now OPEN! Come make art on San Juan Island.

Alchemy’s AIR program is a unique opportunity to live in an immersive arts community on San Juan Island, connect with the wider SJI community via teaching and community art activities, and have focused time to create art in an environment that supports collaboration, cross-pollination, and innovation. Artists-in-Residence have the opportunity to work in all of Alchemy’s focus areas (regardless of their area of expertise), and experiment with mediums they may not have tried before.

Our studios are focused in ceramics, printmaking, fiber arts, and analog photography.
2026 Program Dates:

Teaching/Special Projects Residency: May 1st to June 9th
Artists in Community Residencies: June 13th to July 21st and July 25th - September 8th

Applications for 2027 will be open from 10/5 to 12/7. Read more about this program and apply here:
