As you enter the Deported U.S. Veterans Gallery, there is an American flag installation that immediately catches your attention. The vibrant papel picado felt out of place in a space that discussed the struggles of deported veterans. Yet, it is this flag with the big S.O.S. on each piece of paper that represents Dr. Lizbeth De La Cruz Santana’s Deported Veterans Diaspora Mural Project. Seen mostly during celebrations, the papel picado creates a mood of sadness instead of joy. It serves as a call to action for viewers to aid deported veterans in returning to the U.S.

Join us for the final Arte, Pero Later event of the season with Dr. Lizbeth de la Cruz Santana on June 25th 6-8 pm. This digital storytelling workshop introduces participants to the digital storytelling methodology developed through the Humanizing Deportation and Humanizing Asylum project. The session will explore the process used to support storytellers in creating short testimonial audiovisual narratives that combine personal reflection with photographs, video, music, artwork, and other visual materials.

Open to all individuals with little or no formal training in multimedia production. Join us to learn how communities can tell their own stories, in their own words, on their own terms.

Waves is a contemplative installation honoring deported U.S. veterans and the profound distance between service, exile, and belonging. Through subdued light, the sound of the ocean, and crosses arranged in sand, the work invites reflection on separation, sacrifice, and the enduring consequences of displacement. Waves in Humanizar Historias will be on view until June 28th.

Join us for the Artevismo Candle Workshop, inspired by migration journeys and the voices featured in the Humanizar Historias exhibition currently on view at Arte Américas on June 28, 1-3 pm. Participants will design a personalized candle/veladora by creating original artwork for the front and a meaningful written piece for the back, such as a statement, poem, or reflection connected to the theme of migration.

Through collage, drawing, and writing, participants are invited to reflect on personal, family, and community experiences connected to migration. No prior art or creative writing experience is needed, just a willingness to create and share in community. Seats are limited, so be sure to reserve your spot today!
___________

Diez Anos/Ten Years within Humanizar Historias utilizes public art, weather, and time to demonstrate a call to action against harmful U.S. immigration policies.  Dr. Lizbeth De La Cruz Santana’s decision to leave the 15 portraits at the Playas de Tijuana untouched for 10 years allows the work to hold U.S. and Mexican governments accountable for their lack of response to the needs of undocumented individuals. The large text on display informs visitors about the Immigration and Nationality Act. Beside the text, three dark pieces of Polytech were retained from John Guzman’s portraits and displayed in the exhibition, giving visitors a closer look at the materials used for the Tijuana border wall mural. Lastly, an image taken by Juan Antonio Del Monte shows the current state of the mural at Playas de Tijuana after seven years.

Meet our featured artist of June, Milton Homann!

“Nepegñe wünenkeche” is a prologue that sheds light on the characters of the book and series The Chronicles of Ankatu. What appear to be random daily scenes of these dramatis personae actually provide clues to the four main characters and their relationships with each other. Their behavior is conditioned by the teachings of the Mapuche, and the symbolism within the paintings follows a strict iconographic meaning. This body of work goes beyond artistic expression: it explores the idea of a decolonial imagination — specifically a spiritually based worldview rooted in Mapuche and Selknam cultures.

Milton Homann is a born and raised Spanish artist, currently living in California, although he finished his studies in Germany. The main concentration within his artworks comes from his Argentinian roots, specifically from Patagonia. This is where his influence and connection to the indigenous tribe, the Mapuches, comes from. The main purpose of his work is to publicly introduce new perspectives and cultural heritage. Impulsed by giving his family and his people a voice within the
art scene.

Milton Homann’s work will be on view until June 28th!

The yellow desk from Dr. Lizbeth De La Cruz Santana’s Exhibition Humanizar Historias shows how well the curatorial team was able to entwine art and academia. From the sticky notes plastered all around the desk, books stored and opened to the last page, you used to find that one reference needed. Plants all around, giving it an “always at the desk that everything you need is within arm’s reach”. Adding personal touches to the desk helps the viewer place themselves in Dr. De La Cruz Santana’s shoes. Painting everything yellow makes sure that what was placed on the desk is what calls attention and not the desk itself.

The yellow desk installation and Humizar Historias are on view until June 28th!
