Sean Torres (he/him) is a junior Theatre Arts - Acting major playing the role of Unknown Male in our upcoming production of ‘Is This a Room.’

“What makes this show unique to me is that we aren’t telling a story that someone sat down and wrote. These are the actual words spoken during Reality Winner’s FBI interrogation, even down to the pauses, stutters, and awkward moments. It tackles things like government power, surveillance, patriotism, and how quickly someone can lose control of a situation. I also think it’s interesting because the FBI agents aren’t written like these obvious villains. A lot of what happens seems normal or even friendly at first, but there is always this underlying feeling that something isn’t right. That makes the show uncomfortable in a really interesting way because we’re watching a real moment in someone’s life where everything is about to change”

‘Is This a Room’ runs October 2-10, 2026 in the Dennis and Cheryl Woods Theatre. Tickets are available by visiting the link in the comments.

Join us in congratulating Associate Professor of Theatre Dr. Gina Sandí-Díaz on the publication of “Directing Intersectionally,” co-authored by Rachel Blackburn, Dr. Molly Claassen, and Keyanna Alexander!

The book takes a thoughtful look at 21st century theatre-making and the evolving role of the director, exploring how intersectional identity, empathy, and care can shape more sustainable and meaningful creative processes.

Dr. Sandí-Díaz’s creative and scholarly work centers on Latin and Latin American Theatre, Performance Studies, and Applied Theatre, and we’re thrilled to see her expertise and perspective contributing to this important conversation about where theatre is headed next.

Congratulations, Dr. Sandí-Díaz! We are so lucky to have you as part of our Theatre and Dance family!

If you’d like to grab a copy of “Directing Intersectionally” of your own, check out the link in the comments.

Our 2026/2027 Mainstage Season kicks off with the daring docudrama “Is This a Room,” originally conceived and directed by Tina Satter and directed by Michelle Bellaver.

Based entirely on the verbatim transcript of the 2017 FBI interrogation of Reality Winner, “Is This a Room” follows the former Air Force linguist as federal agents arrive at her home to question her. Winner was later charged under the Espionage Act after leaking a classified document concerning Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. election.

Rather than dramatizing the events through a traditional script, the play is built from the actual words spoken during the interrogation. Mundane questions, awkward pauses and seemingly ordinary conversation gradually transform into an unsettling portrait of power, fear and uncertainty.

The Broadway production was praised for finding suspense in the seemingly mundane. The New York Times called it “astonishing emotional theatre,” while Variety described it as a “formally daring docudrama.”

‘Is This a Room’ runs October 2 - 10 in the Dennis and Cheryl Woods Theatre. Tickets available now through the link in our bio.
