Independence Day — August 19, 1776

For Freeport and all the towns of ancient North Yarmouth, today is Independence Day: the day the Declaration of Independence was received and first read publicly to citizens gathered at the original meetinghouse on what is now Route 88 in Yarmouth.

Rev. Tristram Gilman read the Declaration aloud after church services, as Massachusetts had ordered every minister to do upon its arrival. Town Clerk David Mitchell then transcribed it into the town records, also as ordered — the entry is preserved today at the North Yarmouth Historical Society.

Lilacs were among the favorite May blooms used to decorate the graves of Civil War veterans on Decoration Day — what we now observe as Memorial Day. Today we remember all those from Freeport and beyond who, in Lincoln’s words, “gave the last full measure of devotion.”

This morning’s Memorial Day observances in Freeport were canceled due to heavy rain — but we remember still. This afternoon, the sun is peeking out at Pettengill, where Millie’s white lilac is blooming, along with the apple trees and white narcissus.
