Figures of Speech Theatre creates theater rooted in the expressive power of the puppet and challenges audiences to venture into realms that are mythic, larger-than-life, animated explorations of the numinous boundary world between being and becoming. Founded in 1982 to explore the interplay of puppets, actors, shadows, movement, and masks, Figures of Speech comprises three main areas of activity:

we PERFORM touring productions, we CREATE elegant figures commissioned by or in collaboration with other organizations, and we EDUCATE students of all ages in the art of the puppet.

Dear Friend of FST,

Though it should come as no surprise by this point, we wanted to let you know that our upcoming recitations of T. S. Eliot's Four Quartets in Yarmouth and Portland—as well as future dates in the works—have been cancelled due to the necessary measures being taken in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The performances will most likely be rescheduled for future dates and we will keep you posted once that happens.

For the time being, we encourage each of you to hunker down and stay safe, knowing that your precautions benefit and protect us all. To the extent you can, savor the comforts of home and this newfound time for stillness and reflection.

In the coming week, we will be sharing resources for streaming entertainment and activities that you can do with any budding young puppeteers in your home!

As with our fellow arts organizations from around the globe, Figures of Speech Theatre relies on the generosity of individuals like you. Please consider making a donation to FST to help us weather the dark months to come and emerge just as vibrant on the other side.

Stay safe & be well,
John Farrell

Many thanks to Bob Keyes for his lovely profile in the Portland Press Herald of John Farrell’s recitation from memory of T. S. Eliot’s “Four Quartets.” In the coming months, John will tour his recitation to venues throughout Maine.

Of particular note, Colby College will present “Four Quartets” in a joint program alongside the DaPonte String Quartet titled, “Words Move/Music Moves,” on Tuesday, February 11. The Quartet will perform Beethoven’s “String Quartet in A Minor, Opus 132,” which was a source of inspiration for Eliot as he composed his poetic masterwork.

We invite you to read the Press Herald article for a glimpse into how this undertaking began as well as insights from poet Mary Dowd and theater director Griff Braley.

The video recording of "What Would Puppets Do?" has been shared on YouTube for your viewing pleasure. We invite you to enjoy the final student performances for our Devising Puppetry course at The College of the Holy Cross.

www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL829HYB0yoGp3FulzeYtBkPK0Xyr2uavW

The five original, 3-5 minute puppet pieces are interspersed with some personal reflections from our students on their 13-week exploration of bunraku-style puppetry.

As John told the audience during his welcoming remarks, "We had a really terrific time working with this group of people. They're all inventive, fun, kind, cooperative, nice people."

Moreover, we were thoroughly impressed with the performances our students created collaboratively during the semester. Click here to view "What Would Puppets Do?" and see for yourself!

Though we say it often, it's true: This work is only made possible with your support. Please consider making a donation in support of FST today.
