Still managing to avoid my annual plein-air painters' sunburn, although it was only averted by my shade umbrella today. It can be hard to chose a spot to paint Tahoma on these gorgeous clear summer days, but Seward Park is always a winner. Also, the continuous parade of wildlife passing by my lakeshore "studio" were a wonderful addition to a perfect day of painting.

Revisited this great keyhole view of Tahoma from a little park just south of the more highly trafficked Seward Park. I'm always thrilled to catch great views when the surrounding flora is putting on a special display as well. The mature rhododendrons on the park edge were in glorious bloom, and added a bright touch to the scenery.

Completed yet another study of the hazy Seattle skyline at sunset from my neighborhood today. Revisiting these favorite painting spots has given me a more mature insight into the series I studied in school by Monet and other impressionist painters. Looking at the "same" view over and over used to seem tedious, but now I appreciate the deeper understanding I gain with repeated sessions at a particular location.

I'm having a fabulous time hosting at the Art Stall Gallery today in Pike Place Market! Got a gorgeous peony from one of the market flower vendors, and I've been enjoying some time with my watercolors between chats with visitors from all over. I will be back at the gallery next Saturday the 23rd if you'd like to stop by and say hello. artistatwork

At long last I've taken some time to paint the gorgeous springtime views! This past month and a half I've been juggling many life changes including a move. Overall the transition is taking me in a great new direction, but moving seizes every free moment and demands all of your attention and energy. It felt incredible to breathe saltwater air and let go of the to-do list this afternoon as I sank into island time and painted the low tide in one of Whidbey Island's gorgeous bays.

Spent a lovely afternoon "quilting" the Seattle skyline in paint from the West Seattle waterfront. Next visit I'll have to attempt to capture the fleeting moments of golden and bronze highlights which gild the skyscrapers at sunset. miniaturepainting pugetsound seattleskyline westseattle donarmeniboatramp spaceneedle seattleartist

The play of light on Puget Sound during cloudy (somewhat rainy) days in late winter seems almost metallic. I love watching the silver effect of intermittent sunstrikes offset by pewter deepwater currents shifting across the face of the water. It was especially fun to play with transparent glazes as a way to portray the veils of rainfall passing over the Olympic Peninsula across the Sound. miniaturepainting richmondbeach richmondbeachsaltwaterpark pugetsound seattleartist

This bouquet of early spring tulips from Pike Place Market has continued to bring me smiles all week as I added the finishing details to a still life begun during a live painting session at the Market's Love Local event last weekend. I'm grateful to the farmers who bring this joyful color to the heart of Seattle daily, along with all the other vendors and artisans that make a visit to Pike Place special every time. tulippainting marketflowers floralart stilllifepainting

The past two days I pushed myself to take advantage of the sunshine, even with chilly February temperatures, and get outside with my plein-air painting kit. After taking a stroll through the lower gardens at Kubota, I settled upon revisiting the lacquered red bridge. That bold pop of color is a reminder of the abundant blooms just around the corner in springtime. At the moment we're impatiently enduring the quiet season in nature, but signs of new life are everywhere - especially in this green oasis within south Seattle. redbridge oilpainting gamblinoils siennaeasel
