"Rialto Beach Sunset I" - 5 by 7 inch watercolor, 8 by 10 inch frame - $260.00 at the Art Stall Gallery

Just completed this watercolor of the gorgeous Rialto beach at sunset from my photographs taken on a trip this summer out to the Olympic Peninsula. I'll be bringing it to the Art Stall Gallery in Pike Place Market tomorrow (Friday, October 23rd), if you'd like to see it in person and get a chance to chat with me as well. I know I'll be painting more scenes from this magical evening enjoying the sounds of Pacific surf washing over black river rocks.

Sometimes life thoroughly interrupts solid plans, and this past week a family medical emergency took all my energy and attention. I'll be letting go of an attempt to complete a daily drawing during the Inktober challenge, and simply participate as much as I'm able while needing to be more present elsewhere. The past week I've been working away on this piece little by little, and it's buoyed my spirits to craft this charming creature and their magical surroundings. My composition was inspired by the Alia Bird prompts for days 8 (stoat), 9 (mycelium), and 16 (ink cap).

Stayed up until past one a.m. yesterday getting deep into the details of this "stoat", which was the prompt for day eight of the Alia Bird Inktober daily drawing challenge. I did work out a composition which surrounds this adorable guy with several other prompts from the coming days (mycelium and ink cap), to allow me more time rendering the pelt of a least weasel... while repeating to myself that wild animals are always highly inappropriate pets.

Today's Inktober prompt from Alia Bird, "offering", was truly a challenge to render. The indistinct lighting of a charcoal fire burnt to flickering embers within a carved stone basin stretched my draftsmanship skills. For the time being, I will let these fruits, berries and nuts roast away as my offering to the spirits of this season.

Today's pen and ink of a "puma" from the Alia Bird Inktober prompt list was fitted into the end of a long, busy day. Revisiting the quick sketch techniques from college life study classes felt very freeing. Sometimes setting yourself a limited time and embracing loose movements can be quite satisfying.

I'm really starting to feel the immersion in creative energy as I continue developing yesterday's composition to include the prompt from Alia Bird for day four of Inktober - "ember". Rendering the contained light and subtle movement of a wood fire reduced to coals made me nostalgic for sitting over a campfire.

Getting really indulgent with my day three and four (and perhaps a few other daily prompts will work their way into this composition) Inktober/Drawtober efforts. Alia Bird gave everyone "bramble" as our day three prompt, and it's simultaneously romantic and giving me flashbacks to the never-ending battle as a Pacific Northwest gardener against invasive Himalayan Blackberries and their thorny revenge.
