Spent a few hours this afternoon completing the foreground waves of Lake Washington on this view south from O.O. Denny park. Thankfully I already captured the hazy profile of Tahoma and Bellevue's skyline last week when clearer skies prevailed. It's always a fun challenge to define the mountain when it presents very nearly the same value as the sky surrounding it.

Nothing centers and calms your mind quite like an afternoon spent near flowing water. The waterfalls within Bellevue Botanical Garden are gorgeously designed and planted - especially this portion with a school of brilliant goldfish to set off the dramatic scale of the foliage.

I didn't feel quite up to the challenge of adding a squadron of Blue Angels to this view of Tahoma (Mt. Rainier) from the Leschi waterfront on Lake Washington. But it added a lot of unexpected excitement to my afternoon watching them pass just overhead as they practiced for the annual Seafair air show.

Spent a few hours after my shift hosting at the Art Stall Gallery in the market today completing this study of the clock sign. I love playing with the high-energy color palette at Pike Place Market!

I just completed this study of the lower gorge area of Whatcom Creek in Bellingham's Whatcom Falls Park after a decent start on location last week. With four hours available to paint in the park, I was able to establish the composition, block in light and shadow areas, and get the colors of these mossy boulders dialed in. The filtered light coming through deep forest canopy along Whatcom Creek is stunning, and I hope to make it north to revisit this beautiful park soon.

Got in several sessions working on another view of the landmark Pike Place Market neon clock sign today, between training at my co-op gallery here on our new sales system. I love spending a summer afternoon at our citys' historic market. The sounds, smells, and snippets of conversations flowing by help to move me into the meditation of painting.

I've been enjoying several lovely afternoons painting this view of the Mountlake Cut from a petite street-end park off Lake Washington Boulevard. The floating house lifestyle looks quite appealing from this perspective, with adorable ducklings, boaters and paddleboards drifting by in the sunlight.

The skies were much clearer two weeks ago when I started this study of the iconic clock sign at Pike Place Market. Thankfully I only had the foreground flowers and architectural elements remaining to complete during today's cloudy painting session. These fine lines and complex perspective gave me fits - but I'm happy I saw it through and stepped outside my comfort zone.

I spent several days this past week bathing in the glorious natural surroundings near Forks on the Olympic Peninsula. Between hikes and beach excursions with my friends, I was able to squeeze in a few hours painting on the Calawah river under the Hwy 101 bridge on the north end of town. I did end up finishing this study in my home studio, but getting the major color notes on location is always important to capturing the essence of a location.
