135 YEARS, 135 FACTS... For 27 of the Opera House's 135 years, every June would see our Bach & Beyond Baroque Music Festival take the stage. A week long event, the Festival made memories not only in perfomances, but in the Bach's Lunches at the White Inn, Brookside B&B, Lazzaroni's, Upper Crust, Intermezzo, and more; the nightly dinners and Sunday breakfasts hosted by a multitude of Bach supporters; the yard sale, basket auction, and bake sale; the pre-concert conversations; the post-concert receptions and more.

Over the 27 Festivals, our musicians performed 329 individual works, created by 102 composers. The composer most often performed was, no surprise, Johann Sebastian Bach with 72 different works.

There are two works which tied for the piece most often performed, each performed four times: Bach’s Concerto for Violin in A minor, BWV 1041 – performed in 1997, 2000, 2012, and 2024 and Bach’s Concerto for Violin in E major, BWV 1042 – performed in 1999, 2007, 2017, and 2023.

The most recent composer was Grant Cooper, who composed seven pieces for the Festival, and who also acted as Artistic Director and Conductor for all 27 years. And whereas there were many devoted musicians in Bach & Beyond, only one other artist shared in returning every year, Oboist Cheryl Bishkoff.

Maestro Cooper and the Opera House came to the mutual agreement to end the Festival in 2024, due to the changing landscape of audience tastes and the ending of several other classical music events in the western New York region.

We always looked forward to time in the office this week because it's when we'd be treated to the daily rehearsals drifting in from the theatre. But it's quiet now, and it is missed.

Saturday & Tuesday, June 13 & 16 at 7:30PM - MICHAEL tells the story of Michael Jackson’s life beyond the music, tracing his journey from the discovery of his extraordinary talent as the lead of the Jackson Five, to the visionary artist whose creative ambition fueled a relentless pursuit to become the biggest entertainer in the world. Highlighting both his life off-stage and some of the most iconic performances from his early solo career, the film gives audiences a front-row seat to Michael Jackson as never before. This is where his story begins.

“Michael is a masterclass in what a biopic should be. Energetic, sincerely funny, and dedicated, at the very least, to bringing the style and voice of Michael Jackson to life on the big screen.” – Screenrant. Rated PG-13 for Smoking, Language, Some Thematic Material, 130 mins. The Opera House Cinema Series is sponsored by Lake Shore Bank. Tickets - Adults – $7, Members/Seniors – $6.50, Students – $5
