“Forever Home”

Some of you may already know that, in addition to art and writing, I also own a cat hotel and spa. One of the services we offer is acclimating newly adopted cats to the cats who already live in their forever home on neutral territory. We all know, cats are territorial, and sometimes they don’t take kindly to the humans bringing a new cat into their hard-won territory. What we’ve learned over the past eight years of our business is that cats on vacation here at Cat Camp don’t defend territory, because no one’s too clear on whose territory it is.

That makes it a great place to meet and interact with a newly adopted cat’s “siblings.”

In fact, we’re doing it right now. Kiki is getting to know her new sister, Pip, amongst all the other kitty guests, so that they can return in peace to their forever home.

Because everyone deserves a forever home, the inspiration for this piece.

“Arroyo”

Inspiration comes from anywhere. Unexpectedly, oftentimes. Take this piece—so, the drainage in our yard sucks, and as a result, we often get water in the scary basement of our 1872 house. We’ve been discussing the idea of building an arroyo, or a dry river bed, down our sloped backyard, to direct the water flow. From a yard project to address a drainage problem, that causes home annoyances to…art. It really is out there, inspiration is, floating around all of us like stardust. We just have to open our eyes, minds, hearts.

“A Well-Spent Day”

I live on the coast of Lake Erie, specifically the coast where we look west toward magnificent sunsets that rival coastal views. I also have a cool group of friends on an ongoing text thread, and every few days a text will go out from one of us to the rest of us: “Headed to the lake for sunset if anyone wants to join.” It’s just a simple, communal way to cap off a good day—or a bad day, for that matter—with fun company and the grounding beauty of nature.

“Gossamer”

I almost never dive into soft colors. I don’t know why, other than my eye is drawn to fully saturated, punch-me-in-the-face COLOR. So, I decided to go with a soft, soft, soft palette and restrain myself from falling into brights or darks. It challenged me! But it was fun also, and the result gave my brain a soft place to land.

“One if by Land, Two if by Sea, When Coming by Air, the Vultures Bring Three”

Okay, stick with my weird train of thought here, haha. I was thinking about creating the perfect motley crew of animal assassins, and I came up with (1) house cat—apex predator in a cuddly fur suit, (2) poisonous jellyfish, (3) a shark, the kind that bites, and (3) three vultures, for the clean up crew.

Hey, inspiration comes when it comes! 😅

“Inner Workings”

Inspired by nature, specifically flowers, which seem to exist so simply, so unbothered by everything that bothers us humans. And yet, at their cellular level, there are intricacies and marvels of biology we simply don’t see. A metaphor for how we should see and interact with the humans we encounter, too. Nothing is as simple as we imagine, if we dare to look beneath the surface.

“Pipping”

It’s graduation day in my college town, which inspired the name for this piece. All those starter adults making that first shell crack into the rest of their lives. Special congratulations to my sweet friend, Tula Mistretta: go KILL IT in grad school, sis! Love you!
