Meet Ali Dettmer, Principal Flute

From delicate melodies to dazzling runs, Ali Dettmer's shimmering flute work brings the FSO's woodwind section to life.

A Richmond-area native, Ali serves as Principal Flute of the Fredericksburg Symphony Orchestra and Second Flute of the Lima Symphony Orchestra. She also performs regularly with ensembles throughout Virginia and beyond, including the Richmond Symphony, Williamsburg Symphony, Charlottesville Opera, and Akron Symphony Orchestra.

Her artistry has earned recognition in competitions including the Kentucky Flute Society Young Artist's Competition, where she received first prize in 2020.

Ali holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in flute performance and K–12 music education from Carnegie Mellon University and a Master of Music from the University of Michigan. She has studied with acclaimed flutists including Alberto Almarza, Amy Porter, Jeanne Baxtresser, and Jennifer Lapple.

The future of music starts with an opportunity to learn.

Through a generous grant from the Rappahannock Rotary, Fredericksburg Symphony musicians are bringing their expertise directly into City of Fredericksburg schools, providing small-group instruction on their instruments.

For many of these students, private music lessons aren't an option. Learning directly from professional musicians gives them a unique opportunity to build their skills, discover their potential, and experience what is possible through music.

We're proud to invest in the next generation of musicians and help make music education accessible to more students in our community.

What does it feel like to perform in a professional orchestra?

For select high school musicians, it's an experience they can now have firsthand.

The Fredericksburg Symphony's student intern program gives highly qualified students the opportunity to audition for a place alongside our professional musicians during rehearsals and a concert.

It's more than a chance to play. It's an opportunity to experience the discipline, collaboration, and artistry of a professional orchestra from the inside.

We're proud to give the next generation of musicians a seat in the orchestra.

Meet Amelia Bixler, Principal Oboe

Since joining the Fredericksburg Symphony in 2025, Principal Oboe Amelia Bixler has brought exceptional artistry and experience to our orchestra.

A Georgia native, Amelia also serves as Principal Oboe of the U.S. Navy Band in Washington, D.C., and has performed with ensembles including the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra.

Beyond the concert stage, Amelia is passionate about expanding the possibilities of the oboe. As both an accomplished oboist and classically trained soprano, she has collaborated with composers to premiere innovative works that blend voice and oboe in exciting new ways.

She holds master's degrees from the Yale School of Music and a bachelor's degree from the University of Georgia.
