Dead Fred Has a History

Growing up as a child in Fredericksburg Va in the 80’s and 90’s before it became the booming metropolis that it is today, we kids had a nickname for our little town. “Dead Fred” It was flat out boring and there was nothing to do.

Little did I know in the late 80’s when I was introduced to the music of The Grateful Dead, the moniker would take on a whole new meaning. I started exploring different similar music cultures in and around the area and found this town had quite a diverse and talented music scene. We had places like The Irish Brigade, Orbits, Santa Fe and other venues that offered great live music and hosted various national touring acts. This helped me further discover my love for live music and the different styles that were out there.

Through the 90’s and 2000’s we have seen the music scene here dwindle. Sure there are still venues that host music but the passion just doesn’t feel the same. Don’t get me wrong, its not just the type of music. I celebrate all genres from Jazz and R and B, to Rap and Hip Hop, to Blues to Bluegrass. I support it all. I feel we are lacking the culture that was once here.

I want to create a new culture “Dead Fred” which celebrates all of those great experiences of the Late 80’s and early 90’s that introduced me to the countless wonderful experiences that I had listening to so many talented musicians which I associate closely with my introduction to The Grateful Dead.
