FXBG folks: I’ll be guest bartending on Wednesday, Sept 30 as a fundraiser for the Brompton Community School. C’mon out to River’s End Speakeasy and watch me do my best impression of a bartender who actually knows what he’s doing.

The fundraiser goes from 5pm-8pm with a new pair of guest bartenders every hour. The bartending pairs will be competing against each other to see who can bring in the most tips for Brompton. I’ll be working the 5-6pm shift to catch the happy hour crowd.

For those unfamiliar, Brompton Community School is a nature-based, K-8 independent school in Fredericksburg. They’re amazing.

Hope to see you there!

Two books for the Fredericksburg City Public Schools.

These were fun collaborations between Fredericksburg City Schools as sponsor, Theresa Cramer from Fredericksburg Area Museum as author, and myself as illustrator/designer.

It was a hoot to be able to draw Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier (aka Marquis de Lafayette) when he fought in the American Revolution as a young bewigged lieutenant general, then again as an elder statesman on his grand U.S. tour in 1824.

Random fact: During that tour, Lafayette was gifted a baby black bear by William Clark (of Lewis and Clark fame). And what exactly is one supposed to do with a bear while traveling across the country? Well, the bear cub was sent to France and became the first black bear on display in a French zoo. So next time you’re looking for a white elephant gift, consider a black bear.

An aquatic wonderland created for . designed the vibrant buildout of their new location and included spots for two murals:

Reception area
A bold, geometric array of fish and other fun water creatures. The palette is drawn from the corporate colors of Little Fish to integrate with rest of the space. The art is scaled for viewing both from a distance and up close.

Corridor
The hallway the kiddos take to get to the pool features an undulating current of water with fish and creatures. Local favorites include American shad, catfish, and redbreast sunfish. Even an otter and an Eastern painted turtle make an appearance. An abstract skyline of Fredericksburg adds to this local flavor.

Unlike the reception area, the focus of the hallway art is placed at eye-level for kids. I was going for a very personal experience here, offering opportunities for spontaneous discovery and interaction. An otter offers a welcoming high-five and several of the fish feature traits that individual children can relate to. There are fish with glasses (something I would’ve identified with as a kid), braces, a shy fish hiding in a submarine, and even one with headphones to prevent sensory overload.

Hopefully each time a child passes through the corridor they seek out their favorite fish and explore others. What could just be a means to get from one end of the building to the other perhaps can become an engaging and memorable experience.

Thanks to Aaron at Little Fish and Miller at Spaces for the commission and for the creative freedom to make something special.

I had a blast creating this mural for Blue Cow Ice Cream. Their Pungo, Va. shop is close to the beach and is located in the strawberry epicenter of Virginia. Not a bad combo.

Also at the shop are a trip of custom skim boards created by Gabriel Pons (Last pic)

Thanks to Blue Cow and Spaces Studio on another tasty collaboration. 🍦🍓

Maury Stadium, Fredericksburg, Va.
Crisp autumn evenings bring James Monroe High School football to Maury Stadium. Although the academic building moved long ago, the field remains a central venue for several Jayem sports. The stadium was constructed in 1935, when first-class postage cost 3 cents.

All Aboard for a Squishin’ Mission!

Call these pennies what you will – pressed, flattened, smashed, smooshed, squished, or even squashed, if you must – these pocket-sized memories are still the best use of our now-obsolete currency.

Please join me and Mrs. Print Jazz for a rollicking Zoom presentation on squished pennies. We’ll take a look back at their fascinating history, our time running the Squished Penny Museum, and a peek at what the future may hold. Hosted by the Society for Commercial Archeology, it’s free and open to all.

Wednesday, February 11th at 8:00pm EST

The gigantic “This is Fredericksburg” sign stood at Fredericksburg’s front door from 1948–1962. Its strategic placement at the foot of the Falmouth Bridge ensured visitors arriving from the north couldn’t miss it. It also helped that the sign was more than 40 feet wide and lit with neon tubes, a look that was discordant with the prevailing Colonial Revival tastes. In fact, its garish nature caused then-Mayor C.M. Cowan to call it “absolutely a disgrace” and it was removed shortly afterward in 1962.

Times have changed and we now revere the neon that adorns local landmarks such as Carl’s, the 2400 Diner, and Goolrick’s. If you find yourself admiring the charming pomposity of the sign, I’ve created limited-edition diner mugs that depict it. They’re available only at — which happens to be just steps away from where the sign once stood.

The area has changed a lot since the sign was here, but one thing has remained the same: This is Fredericksburg.
