MAY PROCLAIMED OLDER AMERICANS MONTH IN WELD COUNTY
WELD COUNTY, CO — In an effort to celebrate older adults and the connections they bring to our community, the board of county commissioners proclaimed May Older Americans Month at their board meeting on Wednesday, May 1.

The Older Americans Act (OAA) was originally passed by Congress in 1965, and established authority for grants to states for community planning and social services, research and development projects, and personnel training in the field of aging, according to the Administration for Community Living (ACL.gov). The OAA was created in response to concerns about a lack of community services for older persons, and each May serves as a time to revisit and applaud our efforts to help older Americans thrive, as well as finding ways to continually improve on those efforts.

The theme for Older Americans Month in 2024 is “Powered by Connection,” and this year’s focus is on the profound impact meaningful connections have on the well-being and health of older adults. Ensuring that older adults remain involved and connected in our communities for as long as possible benefits people of all ages in the Weld County community.

Members of the Weld County Area Agency on Aging (AAA) staff and several community partners were on hand to hear the proclamation.

“I want to thank this staff for doing such a great job providing such wonderful support for seniors in our community,” said Commissioner Perry Buck. “I cherish older Americans and their wealth of knowledge. There are always opportunities to learn from them.”

Weld County residents are urged to recognize the importance of connectedness within the lives of older adults in our community and to actively aid in creating a society where the positive aspects of aging are embraced and celebrated. MAY PROCLAIMED FOSTER CARE MONTH IN WELD COUNTY
WELD COUNTY, CO — In acknowledgement of children and youth in foster care, as well as the family members, foster parents, volunteers, mentors, child welfare professionals, and policymakers who help them find permanent homes and connections, the board of county commissioners proclaimed May as Foster Care Month at their meeting on Wednesday, May 1.

Foster Care Month is a time to raise awareness of issues related to foster care and to acknowledge those in the community who do whatever is necessary to help children and youth in foster care achieve permanency. Foster parents provide critical investments in the well-being, safety, and sense of stability that is essential for children and youth when they need it most.

Weld County foster families have helped to drastically reduce the number of children and youth in higher levels of care in the past five years, and during the May 1 board meeting, two families who exemplify the qualities of foster and certified kinship families were in attendance: the Dunn and Bushaw/Kiefer families. Both families were recognized. Director of Human Services, Jamie Ulrich, read a few of the glowing comments attributed to these families from Guardian Ad Litems and Foster Care Coordinators, speaking directly to the care, affection, and dedicated reunification efforts they have provided to the children in their care.

Commissioner Mike Freeman took the time to speak on the remarkable work of the Weld County Foster Care team and their community partners. “It’s amazing to me how many new families you bring in all the time,” said Freeman. “It seems almost every board meeting we’re able to approve new foster families, which means you’re doing an amazing job finding these people who are willing to step up to the plate to help these kids.”

The Board of County Commissioners urges the citizens of Weld County to encourage and support children and youth in foster and kinship care and to applaud the commitments of foster and kinship parents as well as dedicated child welfare professionals who invest their time and energy into the lives of these young people in our community.

United Way of Weld County’s cold weather shelter season extended

United Way of Weld County is pleased to announce the extension of the Housing Navigation Center's cold weather shelter operations until at least July 31, 2024. This critical extension ensures that vulnerable members of our community will have access to safe shelter and essential services.
The City of Greeley has provided funding to support the continued operation of the cold weather shelter through the end of July. This generous contribution reflects the city's commitment to addressing homelessness and supporting those in need within our community.
"We are incredibly grateful for the City of Greeley’s partnership, without which we could not ensure the continuation of the cold weather shelter," said Melanie Woolman, President & CEO of United Way of Weld County. "This extension will provide vital assistance to community members over the age of 18 experiencing homelessness, offering them the resources and support they need to work towards stable housing."
The Housing Navigation Center's cold weather shelter plays a pivotal role in addressing homelessness in Weld County by providing temporary shelter, meals, and access to supportive services for community members over the age of 18 facing housing instability. The extended operations will enable the shelter to continue its mission of connecting guests to housing resources and assistance.
“It’s important to note that staying connected to the guests of the cold weather shelter is crucial in getting them back into stable housing,” states Ernest Cienfuegos-Baca, Vice President of Community Impact at United Way of Weld County. “Once shelter season ends and guests aren’t as consistent in coming to the Housing Navigation Center it can be difficult to find them once housing becomes available.”
As we navigate through these challenging times, United Way of Weld County remains dedicated to working collaboratively with community partners to address the root causes of homelessness and ensure that everyone in our community has access to safe and stable housing.
