Actors Repertory Theater

Actors Repertory Theater Since opening our doors in 1996, ART has been producing new & classic works for the stage, as well as developing new works for the stage & screen.

ART works with union & non-union actors. We cast without regard to race, creed, color or sexual identity. The Actors Repertory Theater (ART), is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to bringing new and popular works for the stage to our audience. As a company performing under agreement with Actors Equity Association — the national union of professional stage actors — ART has been an importa

nt and innovative force in the theatrical communities of Southeastern Virginia, NYC, Chicago and the metro Washington, DC areas since December, 1996. ART was originally named 2nd Story Theatre, working in a 75-seat loft space in the Ghent section of Norfolk, Virginia. In 1999 we moved to a larger facility in an old Masonic Temple in downtown Norfolk. With the move, 2nd Story also changed our name to Actors Repertory Theater. In 2001, ART moved to Chicago, New York City and our current home in Frederick, MD. In April, 2003, after helping co-produce the film version of our World Premiere stage show, "Player's Joy," ART began exploring the development of new works for the medium of digital film. Working with Soular Films, our goal is, and has always been, to be a major contributing force to the cultural life of the communities in which we are located, as well as reaching an even wider audience with our collaborative stage & film projects. MISSION STATEMENT
Actors Repertory Theater was founded by a group of performing arts professionals in an effort to create a venue where professional actors, directors, playwrights, screenwriters and technicians could develop innovative productions of contemporary works, new plays, musicals, as well as screenplays for the independent digital film market. It is our goal to explore issues of importance in our diverse community while challenging our audience with provocative works. Additionally, ART is committed to the training and development of aspiring theatrical talent, as well as offering ongoing training for experienced theatre professionals. This vision is realized through classes and workshops, our season of plays, special group outreach projects, a developmental new-play and screenplay reading program and encouragement of related art forms.

Back in November, we introduced Christopher Korman, the new President of ART's Board of Directors.

Today, I take great pride in introducing the first member of ART's new Advisory Board, award-winning composer and conductor Grant Sturiale. Grant and I worked together early in our careers. I'm thrilled that all these years later, Grant has agreed to join the ART team. —Yoni Marten, Artistic Director

Grant Sturiale garnered an Outer Critic’s Circle Award nomination for his score for the Off-Broadway musical hit, “Olympus on My Mind,” conducting its New York run as well as the original cast album.

Mr. Sturiale is a two-time recipient of the Theater for the American Musical Award presented by the New York Musical Theater Festival. He first won for his musical, “Kiki Baby,” presented at the Eugene O’Neill Festival followed by a production at NY’s Primary Stages. Mr. Sturiale’s second win was for his musical “Under Fire.”

For 10 seasons, Mr. Sturiale was principal conductor and composer for the annual Christmas Spectacular at Radio City Music Hall, conducting its original cast album for Sony Records. He also served as assistant conductor for the NY Philharmonic’s presentations of “Candide,” “Company,” and “Sweeney Todd.” An evening of his work as a composer was presented at Lincoln Center. He is also the recipient of a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts and has won numerous ASCAP awards.

As a musical director, Mr. Sturiale has conducted many shows on and Off Broadway, where his credits include the revivals of “The Rothschilds” and “Juno,” among others. National Tours include “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” “Dream,” “Blood Brothers,” “The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber,” “Durante,” a European tour of “Evita,” and Petula Clark’s around-the-world tour.

Mr. Sturiale also wrote and arranged the music for “The Little Prince” and “The Aviator.” Most recently, he conducted a new production of “West Side Story,” which was performed in 10 countries around the world.

Greetings from The Actors Repertory Theater. ART is a professional, 501(c)(3) non-profit company, working with union and non-union actors. We opened our doors in 1996 in Norfolk, VA, with an award-winning production of the comedy, “Parallel Lives: The Kathy & Mo Show.” Since that time, we have produced numerous new and popular works in New York City, Chicago and the DC metro area.

After a hiatus during the COVID pandemic, with our new Board of Directors and Advisory Board of experienced theater and film professionals, we’re raring to go in our new home of Frederick, MD. In 2026, we will be doing a series of staged readings of new and well-known plays and screenplays. We’ll also be presenting a festival of new, one-act plays, as well as offering classes, actor headshots and actor demo and audition reels.

Additionally, we are currently looking for actors, tech people and volunteers here in Frederick and the surrounding area to help us launch our 2026 season.

NEW (Dateline October 18th) He's ba-ack! After a somewhat lengthy absence (don’t ask why — you really don’t want to know), The World According to Yoni is back with friend of the show, Dwayne Epstein, author of the new Amazon Best-Seller, Killing Generals: “The Making of The Dirty Dozen,” a wonderful follow-up to his last book (and NY Times Best Seller), “Lee Marvin: Point Blank.”

There are also a few changes to the show and a number of surprise guests coming up over the next few months, you will not want to miss.

Remember, this newest episode of The World According to Yoni can be watched on the following YouTube link (https://youtu.be/yKdB687RLv0), or listened to on most of your favorite podcast sites, including Apple Podcasts, iHeartRadio, Stitcher, Spotify Amazon Music/Audible, Deezer, etc. And if you enjoy the show, please subscribe to it, either on Yoni's YouTube channel, or on your favorite podcast site.

Yoni also asked me to introduce our audience to his friend and the new Executive Producer of The World According To Yoni, Christopher Korman. Christopher is the son of comedy legend, Harvey Korman, and author of the book, “OMG! It’s Harvey Korman’s Son!” He is also Co-Executive Producer of Soular Film’s upcoming production, “Euphoric Tendencies.” We’re thrilled and very happy to welcome Christopher to the WATY team.

Finally, we'd very much appreciate it if you went to The World According to Yoni's YouTube page and subscribed to Yoni’s channel. We also invite you to visit our Facebook and Instagram pages and “like” and/or “follow” them. And after doing all that, if you're still feeling somewhat ambitious, please go to the pages for our production company, Soular Films, as well as our two current film projects, Euphoric Tendencies and The Reel Life, and doing the same.

Where In the World Is Yoni?

NEW (Dateline May 21) Having received several dozen queries from fans of The World According To Yoni (if you’re wondering, Yoni didn’t know he had fans, either) enquiring as to Yoni’s whereabouts since his March live-cast, Yoni has asked me to inform everyone who has asked — as well as those who haven’t — yes, he’s still very much alive, and the show will be returning within the next few weeks.

Shortly after his last broadcast, Yoni took a tumble down the stairs of his townhouse, knocking himself out in the process. He was rushed by ambulance to an emergency trauma center where it was determined he had sustained a nasty concussion (not surprising although, is there such a thing as a good concussion?) and was suffering bouts of extreme vertigo. He also broke his right hand, his left pinky, had contusions on his head and body, and a hairline fracture of his left hip.

For those who know Yoni, it will come as no surprise that wasn’t the end of it. As he began to recover, Yoni found himself wracked with massive migraines, coughing jags, sore throat, extreme fatigue, fever and chills, and several other symptoms I’d prefer not to mention. Although he tested negative for Covid, the symptoms persisted.

When Yoni found himself too weak to move from his bed, he finally broke down and went to a nearby Urgent Care facility. He sent me a copy of the diagnosis, which, in certain respects is somewhat absurd, so I would like to quote it verbatim. He was informed 1) He had an acute upper respiratory infection; 2) Contact with and (suspected) exposure to COVID-19.

He was given a prescription, told to go home and go to bed, rest, and stay in bed until he felt better. Yoni being Yoni, he had the prescription filled. And while he did return home, I believe it’s fair to say, he ignored the rest of his doctor’s orders. This is the perfect example of why those of us who know and love him, also want to thrash the bloody hell out of him at times. Tanya stands first in that line.

In any event, Mr. Marten is finally on the mend, and almost ready to begin broadcasting new episodes of The World According To Yoni. The show will return in early June with his guest, Dwayne Epstein, author of the NY Times best-seller, "Lee Marvin, Point Blank," who is currently at work on his new book, an inside look at the making of the classic WWII film, "The Dirty Dozen."

Also coming in June, the special, second anniversary World According To Yoni. I don’t know who his guest is going to be as Yoni is being quite secretive, but I’ve been told it’s going to be a very special show. Please keep watch here for additional information.
