Frederic Arts is pleased to welcome Barbara Riegel Bend to the Art Center on Thursday, Oct. 8, from 7-8 p.m. This popular Art Talks series of free programs introduces area artists who share not only how they make art, but why they have chosen artistic expression as careers. The informal events include visual presentations with time for questions. Please join us for an evening with Barbara Bend, and mark your calendars for the final presentation of the series with Michael Whiteside on Nov. 12.
Barbara explains her craft this way: “I tell a story with fabrics that have their own voice alongside everyday leftover objects. I like to make things out of the materials that come my way. In some ways, a group of friends and I have become leftover fabric digesters. Over the years we have gathered boxes, bags, and bails of zippers from factory overstock, been gifted unused fabrics from all over the world, gathered a car full of silk tie fabric from a closing factory, and once a truck load of fabric from a widower who needed the space after his wife died. I look for the buried gems in these cultural remnants; the materials that inspire a transformation from the everyday object to an unearthed concept waiting to show its self. That is why I am a maker, I transform the inert object into a living idea or emotional connection.” Come, learn, and enjoy
