Eddie “Guitar Slim” Jones (1926–1959) 🎸
The Mississippi bluesman who changed guitar forever.

He started out dancing in Delta juke joints, earning the nickname “Limber Leg.” By the 1950s he was a New Orleans legend, rocking bright suits, dyed hair, and a 300-foot guitar cord. He’d play right in the crowd and even out on the street.

In 1953 he cut the classic “The Things That I Used to Do” with Ray Charles on piano. It became one of the biggest R&B hits of the ’50s and made the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s “500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll.”

He influenced Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Guy, Albert Collins, and a whole generation. He was using distorted guitar tones a full decade before anyone else.

Gone at just 32 in 1959, but his sound and style still live on.

July 5, 1954 — Sun Studio, Memphis.
During a break in a recording session, a young Elvis Presley began playing an upbeat version of Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup’s “That’s All Right.”
Scotty Moore joined in on electric guitar.
Bill Black followed on upright bass.
And suddenly, something different was happening in that small room at Sun Studio.
Producer Sam Phillips knew it immediately. He stopped them and asked them to start again — this time with the tape rolling.
The result became Elvis Presley’s debut single:
“That’s All Right”
by Elvis Presley, Scotty Moore and Bill Black.
A record that sold around 20,000 copies, climbed the local Memphis charts, and opened the door to a new sound that would soon shake the world.
Bill Black reportedly said after the session:
“Damn. Get that on the radio and they’ll run us out of town.”
He was right.
They didn’t just get it on the radio.
They changed music forever.
