Thank you WISH-TV and Felicia Michelle for supporting John Strickland's Art reception on Oct. 5th at the CV Art and Frame Fine Art Gallery in the Town of Zionsville - Government from 4 pm to 8 pm. The exhibit will run through Oct. 12th.

The public is invited to attend this free event, where they can enjoy an array of Strickland’s artwork, which ranges from vibrant portraits and abstract compositions to whimsical interpretations of everyday objects. We will be serving beer, wine and h'dourves.

Strickland, a lifelong Indiana resident and Broadripple High School graduate who passed away in December 2022 was known for his multifaceted contributions to the arts. In addition to his visual art, he was a professional jazz musician, poet, teacher, and devoted father.

Strickland honed his musical skills under the mentorship of Dr. David Baker who played a major role in developing the jazz program Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Strickland and Baker developed a deep connection with the Indianapolis and Indiana Avenue jazz scenes and became close friends.

John Fletcher Strickland (JFS) was a very rare person who was brilliant and contained many multitudes: kind, strong and inspirational. JFS lived his life in art, literature, music and as a father. JFS excelled in all of these. He was born in Indianapolis and attended Broadripple High School.

He was a close friend of David Baker who taught him to become a professional jazz musician. David Baker emerged from the Indianapolis Jazz scene as did many others and was instrumental in building the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Jazz was extremely influential in JFS's painting and he used the medium as inspiration.

JFS's paintings can be found in Edinburgh Scotland, London, Seattle, San Francisco, Houston, Cambridge Massachusetts, New York, France, Corpus Christie and throughout Indiana to name a few...

JFS did not like growing old because it got in the way of the things he still wanted to do. - painting, jazz, writing, the occasional nip of Tito's and a secret drag on a cigarette.

Artist Statement:

Painting for me is a right brain-solving problem of its own creation. It can be fun but just as often it can be maddening. I work in acrylics because their fast drying time allows me to make changes that are typical in my work.
