Just 5 days away from Dawn of Defiance' third major update, Hounds of Zeus! As part of our countdown, we're sharing the mythic lore behind the next raid bosses coming to Hounds of Zeus this October 8th! For each of the raid bosses in Dawn of Defiance, our art team researches their appearances in the Greek myths to inspire their design, including the character art and their attack abilities.
The Dark One, Celaeno (Κελαινώ / Kelaino) is considerably more developed as an individual character in the myths compared to Ocypete and Aello.
In Virgil's Aeneid, Celaeno is essentially the spokeswoman of the Harpies. She remains behind to share with Aeneas a prophecy passed between Apollo and Zeus. Also in the Aeneid, Celaeno describes herself as the chief of the Furies, giving her a much more authoritative position than Aello or Ocypete. Another Roman author, Valerius Flaccus, makes her especially distinctive during the Phineus episode, noting that her arrival has a recognizable sound.
Her calm demeanor is rather cold and sinister to anyone that receive her messages. If challenged and she is forced to fight, you will quickly see the abyss and understand why she is called the Dark One. In Dawn of Defiance, you will see this darker element to Celaeno's character represented by her veil abilities, among other details.
