Join us for opening night of our final show of the season—the world premiere of The Civilities by Kyle Bass—Friday, August 7th at 7:30 pm followed by light refreshments in our lobby.
Set in a small town in Upstate New York in 1936 (the 75th anniversary of the start of the Civil War), The Civilities tells the story of Blessah Hart, a dynamic young graduate student at Cornell University, and M. Silas Jackson, an elderly poet and Confederate army veteran. Conducting research for her graduate thesis on aging Confederates living in the North, Blessah interviews Jackson, whose poetry critiques and romanticizes the Old South.
As researcher and subject, Blessah and Silas form an unlikely connection, but when Blessah travels to Silas’s hometown in the South to uncover the missing pieces of his story, neither historian nor poet is prepared for the shocking revelation her research uncovers. This is a full production of the reading FSC produced in the fall of 2025.
