Broadway Clay’s students were lucky to participate in an annual wood firing in an Anagama kiln thanks to the Art Center of the Bluegrass! Traditionally these were one of the first kilns built into the sides of hills. The kiln is fueled with wood for days. As the wood ash settles on the surface of the pots at such a high temperature, it turns to glass and glazes the pot. The kiln firing can also reduce the oxygen level to change the color of the clay body and glaze, which cannot happen in an electric kiln.

Our next atmospheric firing class starts in November and will be a soda fired, gas kiln. Sign up on our website!
