I’ve found that I like to make sets of things when working on the wheel. The first set I put together was a set of “plowls” (not quite plates, not quite bowls) for my son and daughter-in-law as a shower gift in 2017. Although not consistent in size and shape- I was so happy they were functional. Fast forward to 2026- I’m really happy to see that I can make my pieces a bit more consistent in size and shape.

Oh it has been awhile! Cleaned up the studio, made a list of future projects, wedged up a bunch of clay and started throwing a little. Unfortunately due to extra firm clay, air bubbles and being a bit rusty, it was a tough day on the wheel.

Such a talented and wonderful community!

I made this piece last year and really didn’t know what to do with it. Originally I thought a salad or serving bowl, but it is big and difficult to store in the kitchen. With all the hot weather this season, there are a lot of thirsty birds in my yard. This appears to be the perfect solution!

This was another fun technique called sprigging. Little forms of shells were created and attached to the mug before it was bisque fired. The shells were covered with clear glaze and then waxed and the mug was dipped in a couple studio glazes. I liked how this came out.

For this mug, I cut shapes out of tape and applied them after the piece was bisque fired. I dipped the mug in our studio’s blueberry glaze. When dry, the tape was removed. The shapes were outlined with wax in hopes of having a nice border. The piece was then dipped green.

This has potential for future. The colors are a bit dull on this clay body and the glaze combo was a little runny so the upper border is missing on the shapes. With some tweaking, I think it will be a winner.

I was really excited about this mug before it was glaze fired. The bright colored fish made me smile. However, I’m disappointed with the results.

I chose Amaco Storm to glaze the body of the mug with the hope that it would pair well with a canister I previously made.

I think the result is gloomy and I don’t like the grog of the clay showing in the fish. I will try again with a different clay body and a brighter glaze for the water.

What are your thoughts?

I wanted to experiment with the different decorating techniques that I learned from Joyce Lauro on mugs. The goal is to eventually make a set from my favorite designs. Here is the first one…
