No wrist splint. No pain. Just pure, easy color. 🎨

I want to be honest with you about something small but real: I almost didn’t paint today. My elbow needed a full day off yesterday, and this morning I had a choice — wrap it up in the splint again, or trust it.

I chose to trust it.

And it felt amazing. My hand moved across the paper with none of the stiffness I’ve been fighting. Just smooth, confident strokes — pigment blooming into the paper like it had been waiting for this exact morning.

I let myself get WILD with color today — bold golds, deep magentas, soft teals, a hidden pop of charcoal-brown tucked in beside bright yellow. Colors I’ve never put next to each other before. It was one of those rare painting days where everything just… worked.

I’m grateful for days like this one. Creative, pain-free mornings aren’t something I take for granted anymore, and I’m so happy with how this piece turned out.

Micro-hook:
This piece almost didn’t happen the way it did. Let me explain. 🎨

I came into my studio Tuesday afternoon planning to just keep pushing my color experiments further — bolder, brighter, more unexpected combinations.

But partway through, I found out Dolly Parton had passed away, and it hit differently than I expected. I kept painting anyway, and her song “A Coat of Many Colors” kept playing in my head the whole time.

Instead of setting my brush down, I let that feeling move through the piece — every color choice became part of processing it. Teal, coral, mustard, lavender — each one landed on the page like a small tribute.

This turned into one of the most meaningful pieces I’ve painted in this series. A reminder that art doesn’t just decorate — it holds and processes what words sometimes can’t.

Not every studio day involves paint. 🎨

Today my elbow was feeling a little “talkative,” so instead of painting, I gave it a rest day and spent the afternoon working on the business side of Firefly Dreams Art — updating things behind the scenes while curled up with a great read, The Artist’s Side Hustle by Stacie Bloomfield. Highly recommend it if you’re building any kind of creative business.

Here’s the thing about rest days as an artist — they can feel like falling behind. But tomorrow’s canvas is already prepped and taped, ready and waiting for color the second my elbow says go. Sometimes the quiet days are what make the painting days possible.

Yesterday I rested my elbow. Today, I painted without my wrist splint for the first time in weeks — and it felt incredible.

There’s something about giving your body permission to just be, and then showing up the next day lighter, freer, more willing to experiment. That’s exactly what happened this Sunday afternoon. I leaned into bolder, brighter color choices than I normally reach for — magenta against gold, sage against blush pink — and every layer felt like it was uncovering something new about how I see color.

I’m calling this one “Untethered Radiance Bloom,” and honestly, the name fits the whole afternoon. I’m endlessly grateful for days like this — the ones where creativity comes easy and gratitude comes easier.

Rest day, but make it productive 🏈🎨

I gave my elbow the break it’s earned today — feet up, preseason football on, no brush in hand. But you know how it goes: the itch to create doesn’t take a day off just because your body needs one.

So I compromised — spent the afternoon masking off tomorrow’s shapes with painter’s tape (that’s the raw, behind-the-scenes photo above!) so tomorrow’s painting session is ready to go the second I sit down.

Some days the brush feels heavy. Today it felt like flying. ✨

After a full day off — and painting through a wrist splint — I sat down Friday afternoon ready to push my geometric collection somewhere new. I wasn’t sure my hand would cooperate.

It did more than cooperate. The colors came together easier than I expected, bold and bright and exactly the palette I’d been chasing in my head all week. There’s something almost meditative about watching pigment spread across wet paper — you never fully control it, you just guide it.

I’m endlessly grateful for afternoons like this one. Creativity isn’t something I take for granted, splint or no splint. 🧡

Wednesday afternoon, wrist splint on, brush in hand — and somehow, it was one of the easiest painting sessions I’ve had in weeks. 🎨

I sat down to keep building my geometric Scatter and Bloom collection, but I wanted to push myself further with my base color choices this time. Soft sage next to electric coral. A lavender I’ve been too nervous to use until today. I wasn’t sure it would work.

Painting through the splint has been a real challenge lately — some days the discomfort wins. But today, everything clicked. The colors I was scared to try came together in a way that felt both bold and tender at the same time.

I’m so grateful for days like this. Every single afternoon I get to create is a gift I try never to take for granted. I love how “Tender Voltage Bloom” turned out, and I can’t wait to share it with you.

Raw hands. Bold colors. An afternoon that almost didn’t go as planned.

Monday afternoon, I sat back down with my “Scatter and Bloom” geometric collection — determined to keep experimenting with bigger, brighter, bolder color combinations than I’ve tried before.

Painting with a wrist splint has become part of my process lately, and honestly, some days it works in my favor — it slows me down just enough to really see the colors before I commit to them.

The start of this piece felt incredible. Confident brushstrokes, colors flowing exactly how I pictured them. But as I got toward the finish, things got harder — my hand was tired, a few areas didn’t cooperate, and I felt that familiar creative frustration creeping in.

Instead of letting it win, I leaned on positive self-talk and just kept going, one shape at a time. And somehow, that’s when the piece became something I’m truly happy with.

I’m calling this one “Tenacious Prism Bloom” — because it’s a reminder that the messy middle of creating something doesn’t mean it won’t turn out beautiful. I’m endlessly grateful for every day I get to create, splint and all. I don’t take a single one for granted. 💛

I painted through a thunderstorm this weekend — mine and the sky’s. ⛈️🎨

Sunday afternoon, wrist splint on, deep into my ongoing geometric collection — and I wanted to push further. New base colors. Bolder choices. The kind of combinations that make you nervous right up until they work.

Then the actual storm rolled in. And so did mine — frustration, a little anger at a hand that doesn’t always do what I want it to. I didn’t fight that feeling or paint over it. I let it move through me, right alongside the brush.

By the end, the two storms had passed, and what was left was one of my favorite pieces yet — bold, unexpected color combinations I’m genuinely proud of.

This is the honest version of what making art looks like for me: showing up for the process even on the hard days, not just the easy ones. Grateful for the ability to create, grateful for new colors that reignited my love for this palette, grateful this one turned out exactly how I hoped.

Some days the most productive thing you can do is nothing at all.

My elbow needed rest today, so I let it — no painting, no studio time, just recovery. There’s a new geometric piece already taped and waiting for me, and I’ll be back at it tomorrow. But today was about the quieter, less glamorous side of running a creative business.

Honestly? Some parts of building this studio business feel really overwhelming. I want to do this the right way — not just make art, but build something sustainable around it. So today I picked up Your Creative Business (Starving Artist Edition) and its companion workbook by Angie Scarr and Kira Swales. My hope is it fills in some of the gaps I don’t have answers for yet.
