My reef continues to produce baby plate corals. Unfortunately, about 8 months ago I lost quite a few plates, lobos, and a beautiful tongue coral. But I didn’t remove all the skeletons of the plates since they can spawn new ones. Here are some I’ve been keeping an eye on.

Finally had the time to clean out and refill the calcium reactor. I discovered the pump’s impeller cover broke, explaining the crunching sounds that were annoying me. I had an old pump stashed away, so I used that cover for now, but will start a warranty claim to get a new one.

The remaining clownfish eggs on Day 11. Less eggs were present, but clearly fully developed. This was a fun project, taking photos daily to see their transition from start to finish. While it would have been cool to see a few swimmers, I had to work and missed it.

Day 10 photos (these eggs are 10 days old, or approximately 247 hours). Looking closely, and yes, I kinda wish we could look even closer than this, you can see the larvae quite clearly now. The 5th picture shows this the best. The yolk sac is nearly fully consumed now, and those eyes are shimmering in the lighting. I read how they escape their egg, and frankly, it was not my guess whatsoever. Anyone figure they simply chewed their way out? No? Just me? I need to verify the process before I post it.

Sick of egg updates yet? We are near the end of this macro-session. Here are the Day 9 images of the clownfish eggs, which we’ve been observing for changes for more than a week. Photos are taken around 11:15 p.m. nightly, giving us a precise timeline. I guess we could call this a very slow time-lapse. 😜 I just inspected the area a few moments ago, and they are still affixed, so there will be a Day 10 photo taken tonight. It’s very likely they will hatch tonight.

Day #8 of the clownfish egg clutch. Compared to day 0, more rock is visible between the egg envelopes. I wonder if they withered away early on, or if the parents removed them intentionally. More silvery eyes this session, and the tiny folded-up larvae are visible. I thought I saw movement in one last night, but my eyes may have been playing tricks on me.

Seven pictures for Day 7 (age of the) clownfish eggs. Look closely, some silvery eyes have appeared, which is an indicator that they will soon swim away from the protective shell they developed in. The reef’s average water temperature for this batch of eggs has been 77°F, per the Apex. The last picture may be my favorite from this set, including that loner in the bottom right. I believe there will be a Day 8 photo before they are gone.
