Post 6: I had to take a sabbatical from painting due to a frozen shoulder that started around July 2025. For the past 2 months I’ve been slowly getting back into doing things that require fine motor skills and feeling more confident holding a brush. So here is the update. I warmed up some of the wall textures with a glaze of yellow. Touched up some areas that had dried too light and started on the focal point. I was really nervoys about getting the face and hair right but it turned out ok. I’m not happy with how the hand turned out. Some drawing corrections were made and it skewed the hand shape. My hand was not steady enough to maintain the line in the musical notes too but overall I’m happy for what this study taught me. Now to the bag …. Still trying to figure out the best process to follow for the plaid.

Post 5: progressing to the street and path areas. In the pathway I went in with my darkest values first and then just washed over all of it for a base. I will likely go in one flat space at a time wet in wet in the next layer. Fir the street I laid down the lightest color as a wash and have gone in with two layers of stippling textures - wet in damp and wet in dry ish - I will go back wet on dry for the upper two layers to establish the grainy texture.

Post 4: Putting down detail and values for a section. Go layer by layer. Add warmth or cool things down with glazes. Dry brush makes interesting texture.
Color has value. Having a black n white version of your reference helps establish the values in monotone so you control the intensity of colors. Alternatively view your reference image and work side by side using the Mono filter in your phone. (This is a series of posts where I explain my process with this painting)

Post 3. Started on the main painting today. Got the masking fluid down and some early washes and the back wall texture. For the masking fluid I use a stylus tool for small areas and a silicone shaper for lines. I put some liquid down on scrap paper and feed the painting from there. I’m a little concerned about this Liquitex fluid as it peeled back the paper when I took off the excess on scrap paper. 😞

Post 2- Post 2- Follow up of my last post - preparing to start a new detailed painting- I’m swatching colors. It’s fairly important to create a unified palette so the colors look consistent and relate well to each other. You can see how I’m mixing the same pigments in different combinations so every color blend has something from another color.

Posting a little series I created for a Watercolor painting I started last year. I shared the process in some of the mentor groups and thought why not share it right here too.
Getting ready to start a new project. Here are some steps I follow:
1. Sketch or transfer and tape down page
2. Select closest available pigments
3. Create a mixing chart for off tone colors (colors not used straight out of the tube/pan) this allows me to rest the work and return to it later without losing the color recipes.
4. Decide on a process flow / sequence - which techniques to use, where do I want to start or what direction am I working in if it matters to the project.
5. Swatch colors and techniques ( make small example sections to see if my ideas are feasible)
