Did you know Charles Russell even made art out of tree fungus? 🍄

The spirit of play was everywhere at Bull Head Lodge. Russell didn't just paint on canvas, he used the very materials of the forest to create art. He painted watercolors on birchbark and crafted whimsical figures out of moss, twigs, and fungi.

He even fashioned two small, gnome-like sentries affectionately known as "Happy Man" and "Sad Man" to stand guard at the cabin’s entrance, greeting the well-heeled tourists and "dudes" who came to visit.

🎉 Happy birthday to Edwin Willard Deming (1860–1941), an artist represented in the Sid Richardson Museum’s collection!

Born on this day in 1860, Deming spent more than 30 years traveling among Native American communities throughout North America. In the late 1880s, he lived among the Crow near the Little Bighorn River, beginning a lifelong interest in documenting the people, places, and cultures he encountered.

In addition to paintings, Deming's artistic career also included sculpture and murals. He even became the first living artist to have a painting reproduced on a U.S. postage stamp. 🖼️📬

🎨 Watch art come to life during FWADA Fall Gallery Night!

Join us on Saturday, September 19, from 1–3 PM for Artist in Process featuring local artist Isabel Lee-Rosson.

Working live in the museum gallery, Isabel will create a painting inspired by native plants and landscapes. Her work explores the relationship between people and the environment, inviting us to look more closely at the wildflowers, grasses, and fragile ecosystems that surround us.

Presented alongside our exhibition, "Russell's Retreat: Summers in Glacier National Park," Isabel's contemporary perspective on the natural world creates a fascinating dialogue with Charles Russell's landscape sketches and paintings inspired by Glacier.

Charles Russell painted "The Call" in 1910, the very year the area became Glacier National Park.

While visitors were beginning to discover America's newest national park, Russell was capturing its wildlife and landscapes on canvas.

📅 This landscape was painted in the final year of Charles Russell's life.

Inspired by the Swan River Valley south of Glacier National Park, the painting reflects the places Russell continued to visit and love throughout his career.

The autumn colors seem especially fitting for a work painted during the closing chapter of the artist's life.
