Last night after our gig at Truck Yard Alliance, I met this guy named Mark, an aeronautical engineer in town for business who turned out to be my number one fan of the night.
I was standing by the fence after loading my drums into the car, waiting for the rest of the band to finish up. Mark was nearby, so I said hello. At first, he seemed a bit reserved and dry. Then he asked, βSo, do you roll around with these guys?β and pointed to a couple of the band members.
I replied, βWell, I play drums with them.β
And just like that, his whole demeanor shiftedβhe became giddy with excitement! Turns out, Mark plays the banjo himself, so we ended up bonding over our love for music.
He asked if he could have a drumstick, βJust one!β he said, and I happily gave him one. Next thing I knew, he was giving me two big hugs. Suddenly, we were best friends. I thanked him, told him I was glad he enjoyed the music, and chatted with him and another guy who took the photo.
After a few more minutes, I was like, βOk itβs been real, but I gotta go.β
Itβs always nice to feel the love and get that kind of feedback as a drummerβ sometimes you forget how much joy you might be bringing to people when youβre so focused on your own performance and any little βmistakesβ that only you notice.
