ARTIST STATEMENT:
“I set out to create a collection of photographs that capture the world lacking human presence. I became interested in worn down structures that almost looked post-apocalyptic. I chose to use these places to depict what would be left behind if our species were to go extinct. The point of view of each photo is without human life, but in reality they’re all about the things we’ve built to sustain our way of life. Power and telephone lines divide many of the photos into sections, but still contribute to a unified composition.
I sought to make my photos marginally uncomfortable by placing the viewer in the perspective of someone who just woke up in an empty city. I documented my finds almost like an archaeologist would looking back on human civilization.
I came across photos of liminal spaces and was drawn to what they made me feel. Liminal spaces are the places between one point in time and space and the next. They’re the places that you have to pass through to move from one space to another. These places are hardly noticed except for in liminal photographs. These are what gave me inspiration for the feelings of stillness and emptiness I express in my pictures.”.
